The input drum of 1st and 2nd will need a rebuild by the sounds of it. Id say around $600 if you took it to him out of the car.

Id buy a 2nd hand one from a wreck and throw it in, or use a v6 one and change out the input shaft.

Have you done the simple stuff like checking the transmission fluid lever?

Cheapest option is to get a trans joint to give a free quote on repair.
If going for second hand then take it to a trans place to check it out, may cost a small amount to have them strip and check it but atleast you know where you stand before putting it in.

As JXW said, do your best to find a decent second handy. If the history is unknown let a transmission shop give it a quick look over for any obvious lingering faults.
