vr berlina, any pro's out there?

Discussion in 'VR - VS Holden Commodore (1993 - 1997)' started by vrberlina5sdp, Aug 11, 2006.

  1. heya people, i got a vr berlina, 5spd, 300,000km (yeh and still goes great), im having a problem with the heater fan, speed 1 and 2 are same speed and speed 3 goes quicker, when i turn the car on the fan will blow for about a second then turn off, (this happens even when the climate control is off).

i have tried pulling out the heater/fan resistor, the fan only works on speed 3 then, still blows air when i turn the car on!. so i dont think its the resistor.

i tried unpluging the climate control unit, turn the car on and no air blows out!

i have jiggled every cable in the car, i have removed everything to see if its a lose connection, i have run out of things to rip out, something must be broken?

anyone had this problem and solved it? holden want to charge $500 to look at it with no guarrantee they will fix it, yeh right!!.

    cheers people

Interesting problem. My VR Exec series 2 does the same thing. No air coming out front ( believe it to be the selector switch that changes from feet to top vents ) but also did that fan problem. It fixed itself i think but would be interested to know too what causes it.

Sounds like your fan amplifier could be stuffed. The fan amplifier is like the resistor in the models without climate control, and is located in the same place. I had mine replaced last year, was about $140 for the part.

If you run the climate in automatic mode, with the aircon on or off, does the fan speed vary? Or is it always on a constant speed?

  4. hey guys, na its always the same speed, speed 1 and speed 2 are both blowing at speed 2, speed 3 goes at speed 3.

quit annoying actually, tonight i drove home 1 hour with the dam fan blowing at speed 2 even though climat control was turned off. lol...

Yep, definately the fan amplifier. I had the same problem with my VS Berlina. I had the climate switched off, and the blower was still running at full speed, even with the ignition OFF! I had to remove the Blower fusible link under the hood to shut it off, otherwise I would have copped a flat battery!

  6. only prob, mine doesnt work when accessories is off, only when the car is in accessories or running. everything i have read about fan resistors says the problem also happens when the car is off,,

    stuck in a pickle, hehe

Good point. Perhaps there is an issue with the actual climate control unit itself? Only other things I can suggest is perhaps see if a wrecker will let you swap a different fan resistor into your car to see if it solves the problem, or maybe switch over the actual climate unit itself and see what happens.

Failing that, perhaps have a chat to a reputable Auto Elec place, especially one that specialises in airconditioning, they might be able to sort it out for you. $500 for GMH to have a look at it is ridiculous, definately try all other avenues before looking there!

  8. hey guys, all fixed, it was a faulty climat control unit, went to a wrecker, got one for $70 and it works a treat now. thanks
