i was driving and i slammed in into second gear, few hundred meters down just below my handbrake there was a large rattlle sound like something was getting caught, i stopped and had a look and it was the round metal part from the end of the tailshaft the rubber had snapped and now it sits down near the handbrake and rattles when the driveshaft is spinning because it is around that! what is the problem and is it a costly problem??
how could it be fixed

Sounds like the centre bearing has disintegrated in one way or another - that's right near the handbrake cables. How much it costs (whatever the problem) depends on whether you fix it or you pay someone to do it for you.
As DannyboyDS says: take a picture.
