Hey Guys, great site....Just removed the fan switch resistor from under the plastic guard near wiper's (cheers for the info I found here on this fault)....Where would be the best place to replace this part...would one from a wreckers be ok or is a genuine holden spare part a better yet still cost effective option?

BTW Big thanks to Hako....was about to replace my heater core due to water leaking from overflow pipe under stereo...I followed your unblocking drain pipes in another thread and all's great now can't thank you enough mate!

One from the wreckers would be OK but it is probably worth checking the price of a genuine one from Holden because if it isnt going to cost much more for a new one you would be better off getting a new one.

As I have said in my how-to, new one can be purchased from holden for about $50. The one that you will purchase does not use the wire filaments and is much more reliable. Replacing a faulty one for another 10+ years old using a thin wire filament type is only going to waste your $ and you will repairing it again in no time. You might as well repair the wire filament on the one you have there. Pics of OLD v NEW can be found in the how to http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/holden-commodore-how-s/20644-vr-vs-interior-fan-faulty.html

Get a new one from your Holden dealer. They are a different design now, not the silly little coils of wire that burn out. From memory mine was about $45. Getting a used one from the wreckers could be almost about to burn out and need replacing again soon.

Yeah definately just replace it with a brand new one, not worth getting one from the wreckers, as you don't know how long thats going to last either. As the others have said, the new design is much better, and should last longer.

When my fan amplifier (same as the resistor but for climate control models) packed it in, I just had a new one put in straight away, at that time Holden put it in for me, and that meant there was a 12 month warranty on the part and labour... from memory the fan amp was about $150 plus labour on top of that, but for the normal resistor type one, its around $50 or so.

I had a chat with the parts people at the time and they said it was common for both types to fail, and yet some people never have one pack up, and others go through two or more... but I guess with the age of the VS series now, a lot of things will be starting to wear out now.

Thanks for the advice guys....Got one this morning from my local wreckers- only $5.00, working great...Local holden dealer can get them into stock so will order a new one once my replacement fails, yeah on the money at $45
    :)
