For VR you will need the BCM and matching key also unless you have the security disabled on the memcal.
You will need all the wiring for the motor/gearbox/ecu/bcm/ignition key/fuse boxes and battery.
You will find that the majority of these will be in separate sections of loom.

Best you try connecting everything you need then start removing what you don't.

    auto or manual?

as above you'll need the bcm, dash loom, key head or get a memcal with security the security flag disabled.

    AUTO:
the basics needed, decent earth to the block
powered up fuel pump, preferable ecu controlled (powering this to just turn on with ign can cause the injectors to flood if the fuel pump is running to long before engine cranking)
the black connection near where the battery, relays and fuses are usually situated add +12V to the following wires, thin pink with blue trace (o2 and trans), the thick red with black trace (ecu power) & the thick red (DFI & injectors).
near the ecu the the white plug add switched ign power to the pink wire.

Once power is to these places trigger the starter motor and it should run, to turn off remove power from the wire near the ecu and it'll shut down, wire the relays in to turn off with ignition power (as per diagram) to stop voltage drain and flattening the battery.

to work out what you can remove use wiring schematics and trace which wires are not needed from that, get hold of a gregorys manual and copy them, all the wiring isn't just on 1 diagram, this will also show you exactly where relays should be wired as the above mentioned places to add power is just a very basic way to get a transplanted engine to run.
