G'day guys, Was driving my 93 VR Acclaim to work the other night, and noticed the temp started rising. As it was nearing the red, I pulled over, and lifted the hood, only to be greeted by a plume of steam and loud hissing. The radiator was bone dry, however the resivour was full, which was interesting. I filled it up, and got it home, but even still the temp rose to half. Now, when I pour water/coolant directly into the radiator, it leaks straight back out from the engine, behind the belt at the front, about halfway down. There's no oil in the water, it's just going in and coming straight back out. Also, the resivour is still full. I'm thinking it's the water pump, but I really have no idea at all. Any idea what it would cost to get a new waterpump installed? Cheers guys
It sounds like about where the water pump is. There is a hot-to here on how to change it youself, there not hard. Heres a reference still looking for how-to http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...water-disappearing-water-pump-how-change.html This is what you need http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/holden-commodore-how-tos/59610-changing-water-pump-vn-vp-vr.html
Thanks for that mate, RACV confirmed it's a water pump, and I might just have a crack at fixing it myself since the mechanic wants $230. What's the worst that could happen?
If youve got the tools and time theres no point in not going to an auto shop and picking up a new pump and gasket and getting stuck into it on a weekend. It can be a pain to get to but with enough time on hand youll save big on labour costs.
God damn it, bought the pump, got all the parts, all ready to go, and the bolts on the pump pulley are rust welded shut. Managed to get one off, but even coating them in bolt remover hasn't worked. Easiest part of the install, and I can't even get the bloody pulley off. Brilliant.
i had the same problem exept it was my welsh plugs on the passenger side. one of them let go, but its all fixed now. cost around $120 with labour
Did you put your hand on the belt to put a bit of pressure on it so it bites the pulley a bit so you can get a better bite at it.
Sure did mate. I'm up the to the stage where I'm simply stripping the heads off the bolts, and chewing through my shifter and sockets. Gunna take to it with the chisel and angle grinder tomorrow. I'll win this war.
