The power antenna you have isn't designed to work with your dashboard up/down switches. There may be a way to achieve this but it likely means bypassing (or at least re-wiring) the antenna's inbuilt relay etc. The aerial needs power to go up or down. The power feed needs to be constant 12V, not accessory. You can tap this in to the same 12V wire that keeps your radio stations and clock correct for the head unit.

    The antenna works like this:
    Earth
    Constant 12V+
Trigger wire - when this receives 12V, the antenna goes up using power drawn through the Constant 12V. When the trigger wire loses power the Constant 12V lowers the antenna again.

I'd say what's happened is you have wired the Constant 12V to either accessory power or possibly to the antenna out of the H/U.

Thanks for that, so do I have to get a replacement antenna specifically to suit the VR?

I wouldn't think its vr u have to get, it will be vr-vs that is compatible with the dash switch, I don't under stand why a normal aftermarket one that u buy wouldn't work with the dash switches ??

There is only a couple of wires to it a earth wire and a plug for radio correct???

I replaced myn years ago and it just worked, then had it out while painting car and put back in after I had completely forgotten how it went in but again it just worked

I doubt it, just if you are picky with the up/down switch thing you may have to get creative with the wiring of it. Pretty sure 99% of people just let the head unit control up/down and leave it at that. Make sure you wire the signal wire to the correct output from the H/U, so it's only up when you select radio mode.
No, they don't work with the dash switches straight out of the box because power wise they just have 12V, Earth and Signal wires. Signal gets 12V, antenna goes all the way up. Signal gets no volts, antenna goes all the way down. End of story. All that up/down happens within the aftermarket antenna's own integral electrical jiggery. Need to get creative for those switches to work.

Yea all good guys, great info there. At some stage I will pop out with a couple of test leads and have a play.

Well, didn't buy the door strip, but did find a nos rear side back window with rubber, mine are pretty ordinary. Will keep my eye out and see if I can get the other side at some stage, then swap them over :)

You could wire the aerial dash switch so that when you push UP it connects both the constant 12V and the trigger for the aerial therefore raising the aerial, but wire the DOWN so that it only connects the constant 12v therefore lowering the aerial. That way it loses power entirely and won't move up or down when you're not pressing the switch and you can leave it at any height.

You could also wire the Radio Antenna signal wire to do the same thing as the UP switch, so it automatically raises the aerial when you turn the radio on, however you will still need to use the DOWN switch when you turn the radio off. Of course this way the aerial will always go to full extension when the radio is on unless you use a far more complicated circuit which would take far too long for me to work out.

That's a really good idea, thanks, I plan on playing around on the week end to see what i can come up with. I like the idea of leaving it at any height, they are pretty high at full extension.

Well got the aerial all sorted, thanks to Savage1987 and s_ikari2015. Once I understood how the actual aerial works I was OK. I ran a jumper lead from the battery and just checked to see it was working ok. As per the guys above it needs power to one continuously then the other toggles it up and down. So I connected it up, then used a multimeter to check what the switches actually did. Then the dohh moment when I saw the up/down buttons only work if the radio is on. So its hooked up and now that once I turn the radio on, I can manually raise or lower the aerial using the factory buttons, exactly how I wanted it. Thanks all :)

Also had my first fark omg moment. When I ran it this morning it just didn't sound 100% right, almost like 7 cylinders. The problem is I don't know it well enough yet to tell what exactly it should be like if that makes sense. Anyhow had a poke around and everything looked fine, then I checked the plug leads and found one wasn't pushed all the way home. Thought aha that's it. So I took it for a cruise around the block and it was coughing and backfiring a little at first. Though **** what's happened. Fuel pressure, oil pressure, temp everything absolutely perfect. So I just slowly cruised a few hundred meters more and it cleared itself and started to run perfect. Did a couple of throttle stabs lighting both rears up, I think she is back healthy again :) So not sure what exactly that was all about, maybe it had been on the 7 cylinders and got a guts full of fuel, or maybe it was a slight block in an injector. All good now.

Just had the most epic drive up through the Barossa. Went from home the back way through Kalbeeba to Williamstown, then across to Lyndoch, then back down to home. Ran like a dream, just bloody awesome, never missed a beat. Its actually lovely to drive at the speed limit just cruising, fark it jumps up when you give it a bit though. Not far away now from taking it back for the full E85 tune, after that I can give her a bit of serious welly, cant wait for that :)

Yea agree, I am not expecting anything too spectacular to start with, I think the 1.75" headers will really hold it back. But a bit like yours, this is only the start. Btw was just on your thread, loving the idea of smoothing your bay. The pics of your engine and trans out looked bloody cool :)

Cheers mate trust me if u ever pull it out to fit massive turbos or something, out from under Neath is the go

And it should make good power, 1 7/8 would be much more suited

Get that tig out again ay lol

Only reason I was any help there is that I just did one in a VR Senator over Christmas :) so I had to figure out how they worked.

13/4" headers are tiny for 454cui. Needs atleast 2".

Yep 2" are the go, I only used the 1.75s as I had them when I was going LS3. Once its all up and running and I have got bored with the power it has I am going to get a set of custom 2", 4 into 1's made. I think fabricating the actual headers is a bit past my limit of ability fabrication wise :)

Making good headers is a pain in th ass!!!!!

If your are looking to do it yourself, may I suggest you do a bit of research on "expansion" headers and "venturi" type collectors.
