Hey All
Looking at purchasing a new car, well new for me anyway.
The car in question is a 1994 VR SS Commodore 4d Sedan 5.0ltr 4spd auto
The car is fully optioned, including air conditioning, cruise control,
electric windows along with the 185kw HSV enhanced engine
Just a few questions:
What are known problems with the VR's?
Anything i should be looking out for?

Spoke to a mechanic today and he recommended i get an auto, simply because
he said with the holden gearboxes, they simply arn't strong enough, and that
it would spend more time in the workshop, than on the road
Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated! )

Just on the aircon......Here are some known problems

#1.. The liquid lines at the reciever drier seize onto to the reciever drier. Replacement of the liquid line from the reciever drier to the tx valve. Or the replacement of the condensor or both. Approx. $190 - $500 gassed

#2.. Discharge hose leaking. Hose from the compressor to the condensor. Approx $200 gassed

#3.. Tx valve leaking. Small valve that regulates the gas flow. Approx. $200

#4.. Evaporator leaking. Behind the dash. (Dash out 10 hours) Approx $850

#5.. Condensor leaks. Normally top left hand side. Approx $500

#6.. Liquid line leaking at P' Clamp on condensor. Approx $190

#7.. Compressor leaking or self distructing. Approx $1200

#8.. Leaking Heater tap. Causes loss of cooling. Approx $60

#9.. Heater tap staying on. Vacuum switch problem. Approx $50

#10.. leaking on floor. Drain tube blocked. Approx. $20 for deblocking

These are the most common problems I get with the A/c system on VR-S Commodores.

Don't be too scared of the problems, just be aware of them and that The A/c does NOT just need "re-gassing" it WILL have a problem.

Regards Guy.

my bro owns a 215kw vr berlina and he has had no problems with it he drives it hard (thats really a under statment) and he has had no dramas with it apart from he blew the trans coz it had a shift kit which is common for them to do that if they have shift kits an u drive them hard ohh and he blew a head gasket from driving around in 1 gear after he blew the trans an over heating it

A problem i can sugest to look out for is the auto, make sure it chandes properly in every gear and dont give it to much of a caining cos the standard one wont take too much to damage ie:(burnouts) but other than that i constantly hit the rev limiter and the engine is still holding up, engine wise they apear to be very strong.

so id say go for it, i did and havent looked back, grat value for money!

When i bought my VR SS i had a fuel management problems which turned out for new fuel filter, lines and coil, just to name a few costing me $540. Then clutch went on it which was another $700. that is about it. Mind you the guy who i bought it off new nothing about cars so make sure you know how it has been treated.
