I got a VR SS 5.0L stock standard. I want to get the exhaust done but don't want it overly loud as I don't need the attention, but I still want a nice crisp v8 rumble at high revs. Can I have some ideas as to what to get as I am at a loss, I don't know weather to get the exhaust and leave the factory headers or vice versa. Also I was told that I cant put a twin on because of the position of the fuel tank in the VR SS any help would be appreciated thanx.

Hey Schitzo. When i bought my VR it had the standard cast manifolds with a cat back HSV system on it. Wasnt loud but sounded nice. Since then ive had Pacemakers with twin cats to a single system fitted. On a slightly modified engine it sounds crisp and deep while cruising and barks when booted. Cost me about $1800 from my local exhaust specialist.

you can go twin, but it just comes out the same side, as per hsv exhausts. Get some aftermarket headers/extractors, they are wat gives you the bark at the top end! Find a good secondhand hsv system, their mufflers are quite good, and it will suffice with future mods you do!!!!

I just put on a 3 inch Lukey Cat back on my VR and it sounds very meaty. Extractors would sound better with it though but a 3 inch system is good.

Is it really loud mate or just nice and deep? I know it's going to be loud at high revs but I just want a nice subtle note cruising around town

No not really loud but alot meatier (nice and deep) at idle than my old 2 1/2 cat back system. I was wayyy happy with the difference in sound when it was put on the other week. I went to Carline and asked them I want a really meaty system and alot louder than what I had and he suggested what I got (of course if you have alot more $$$ you can get a more complex system).

You will get a few different suggestions here but I like the way my 5L VR sound is now.

I got a 3" mandrel cat back on mine and it was a howler. Louder than 1 meter wide stainless tip on a lancer. But it wasnt a quality note, just a roaring mess. I didnt get that quality sound till i fitted some good extractors. They actually quietened the exhaust quite a bit, but it has a quality burble about it now.
So from my personal experiance i would say put a nice set of extractors on it with a hi flow cat and see how that goes for that nice note.

Dont just look at the exhuast side of things. What I find compliments a good exhuast note is a growling deep induction. Easiest way to get this is to fit a CAI aftermarket type.
Cheers
