They are all known as 4L60E transmissions from VR onwards, the easiest way to be sure it will fit your car is to check out the electrical connector on the transmission. If it has 12 pins its a VR transmission. If it has 13,its a VS transmission, they will both physically bolt up to either car,but the electrical connectors are wrong,so this makes the boxes non interchangeable..For VR you need a 12 pin connector on the transmission, for VS you need a 13 pin connector on the transmission..
Heres a list of the different transmissions used.I got this list off the net,so Im not too sure how accurate it is,but still the easiest way to tell is by counting the number of electrical connector pins.
VN used the 700R4.
VP used the 4L60.
The VR and onwards used various setups of the 4L60E transmission, which is an electronic version of the 4L60.
4L60E 4HDD = 1994 VR V6.
4L60E 4HDB = 1994 VR V8.
4L60E 5HDD = 1995 VR V6.
4L60E 5HDB = 1995 VR V8.
4L60E 6HDD = 1995/96 VS V6.
4L60E 6HDB = 1995/96 VS V8.
4L60E 7HDD = 1997 VS V6.
4L60E 7HDB = 1997 VS V8.

If they both have 12 pins in the connector,it should be fine.Definitely check that first.

If the sticker is missing there is a number stamped on the drivers side of the gearbox. In this link 700R4 / 4L60 Transmission Information/ History | GM Truck Headquarters scoll down the page and see the gearbox with a red arrow pointing to where the numbers are.It is a yank site so dont pay attenion to the numbers or where it says it is on the passengers side. The numbers should be 4hdd... or 5hdd...

I have a 4HDD trans out of a VR sedan that has only done 166000kms. Never towed anything and always had a trans cooler fitted. I am asking $350 for it so if you are interested pm me.
