VR V6 engine vibe after harmonic change

Hi all,

Last week my harmonic balancer went. I had it changed - secondhand part by the way - since then it vibrates - almost like missing - from idle then gradually less noticeable as revs increase.

So: not doing this before the harmonic repair.

Any idea - just trying to save some time/money with mechanics!

Welcome to the forum.
Try running the engine with the serpentine belt removed - run for only a minimum time as you won't have a waterpump ......see if the vibration is still there. If it is then you know that the HB is causing the vibration. I seem to recall that if you fit a balancer from another series you can have the same problem???? - this gives you an unbalance situation caused by misfiring (something about the number of reluctor teeth).

That's pretty much where I am thinking. I am no mechanic but the 'new' vibration after the HB is just too much to be a coincidence. Thanks for the tip and the welcome, much appreciated.

Definitely sounds like one of the later balancers from a VS was fitted. Same thing happened with my old VR but I put up with it for over a year and the vibration actually made the rear main crank seal leak. As soon as I put a VR balancer on the vibration went away and the rear seal did close back up a bit but the damage was already done so it's best to change the balancer as soon as you can.

So, had the HB changed today for the correct VR one. Amazing instant difference. The mechanic also gave the throttle body a quick squirt and suggested change leads too.

I purchased a set of Bosch Sports leads - quoted $90 at one place, picked them up for $44. I guess I am not allowed to name names? Happy to pass on the place to anyone who asks ;)

End result; back to the former glory drive it was ! Smooth as silk.
