Can someone please give me some advice on this? I am fairly certain that in the last 8 years I have owned this car, this light has never worked, but now I am getting picky and want it fixed.

Being a "poverty" pack there is no fancy digital display or warning chimes, quite simply light is meant to be off when there is fuel in the tank, and on when you haven't got much left. I have checked, rechecked and checked again the instrument panel mounting and globe, and even bought a new one to be sure... thats not the problem... and the fuel guage works perfectly.

A few months back my fuel pump died and I had it replaced, that didn't help either... so what is causing this not to work, and how do I go about fixing it? Would it be a sensor of somewhere?

    Thanks in advance.

I may be mistaken, but maybe that light and chime low fuel warning feature hasn't been fitted to your car? I'm pretty sure that it says "If Fitted" in the car manual, under the instrument cluster headings... Also, if the globe wasn't working, the chime still should sound when you have somewhere around 8 litres of fuel left in the tank. To give you an idea, its when the gauge is inline with the small bar just above the red block at the bottom of the fuel gauge.

You are correct in part... the "chime" is not fitted to the car, I understand that. But from factory there is a globe in the red coloured fuel pump location in the cluster.... but at no point does this come on... ever. Which is not normal. My previous Holden from 1974 had this - so it should be working.

Also... I have actually run completely out of fuel.... at no point did this warning light come on. I have (since replacing the globe etc) run it to almost empty and still no go.

Something is definately not working as it should. Just don't know what.

There is no fuel warning light in the VR's, mine does not have it. The VS's were the start of them.

    P.S mine is series one.

That would be both insane and stupid if they don't have that. Insane because its both useful and even my LH Torana had a fuel-low warning light. Stupid because the instrument cluster has a spot for it. The exact lighting is:

Battery, ABS OFF, Fuel, Engine, Oil, Handbrake, Left Signal, ((P)) [whatever that is], Right Signal, High Beam, Press Remote (Blanked), AIR BAG, CRS, ON, PWR.

That, on a factory cluster in a series 1 VR... now unless they were REALLY thinking ahead, it wouldn't make sense to NOT include the more basic of those. The Calais etc had cruise control etc (and I believe it may have been a factory option)... so I understand those not being used... but a fuel-low warning light... when there is a spot and globe already in position in the cluster!!!!

I am sorry, I just can't see why this would be the case. Can you please confirm this.

    (P) is for park brake. The globe between oil and left signal will be brake failure warning.

I have a Berlina, and I have a few more icons, and they are in a different order to the level 2 dash cluster. One of them includes park/brake light failure, the icon is there for it, but its not in use, as this is a Calais only feature.

My parents have a series one VS exec, it has the low fuel warning light and chime, but it also has the seatbelt warning light, which technically wasn't available on series one VS, as it was introduced on the series two, so maybe in your case GMH were thinking ahead of time also, but have not bothered to hook it up....

How very strange... ah well... now I am going to have to make it work with an aftermarket part or something... or perhaps... I can just let it go lol

Well, when the light normally comes on, you have about 8 litres left, so I would say a range of about 50km to be safe.... and the light normally comes on on the first small bar above the red block on the fuel gauge.... so that will give you an idea.
