ok , ive just done a motor change in a vr v6 , bolted trans ,Fly wheel and toque converter 2 the new engine , put in car turn over and sweet all good new engine runs . But now i have no gears no reverse no drive no 1,2,3, and yes the trans has new fluid in it, car wont start unless in park or neutral . i have no idea as to what the saga is , but i keep thinking i have done something wrong , but i have done plenty of engine changes in the past , just never had this problem before .. Please i need some advise ....( HELP ME )
just a guess. but is the stall converter mounted on the gear box imput shaft properly. good luck with it
Car not starting unless in P or N is normal… Every Vs auto does it.. Did you fill the torque converter up with fluid before putting it in?? Did you connect the arm back on the side of the gearbox properly?? Did you put enough fluid in it?
Ive seen a few of these torque converters not get put on the trans shaft properly before the box is installed, and this stuffs the transmission once the engine to gearbox bolts are tightened up. The torque converter needs to be spun around whilst being pushed back onto the transmission shaft until it "clicks" back in slightly. It "clicks" back in twice I think it is before its sitting in its proper position.
ok well , 4.8 L of trans fluid , no i did not fill the torque converter first, but never have before.. gear selector is connected 2 the t-bar . i did not think that the trans would bolt to the engine if the torque converter was not lined up , what part of the trans will this stuff up and can i fix it ..? should i drop the trans and try again ? thanks
You need 7.9l of fluid if filling from scratch. The service refill is 4.8l. That may be part of your problem. Did you check the cold level on the dipstick? No. 21 of common 4L60e problems could also apply: 21. No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. Repair &Refit, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the trans is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.
well no, the trans won't bolt up properly if the dog clutch isn't lined up properly between the pump and torque converter but some people just slap it together and start doing the bellhousing bolts up without checking and the force can shatter the pump..... Is there any error codes? To check if the pump is at fault, as above, check the fluid level of the trans with the engine off and make note where the fluid level is (will be over the full mark. Now start the engine and run through the gears and put it in park, leave the engine running and check the fluid level again, if it's dropped then the pump is working and refill to the the H cold mark, if the level hasn't changed and is where it was when the engine was off then the pump isn't doing it's job, this can be caused by the pump failing or if you're lucky the filter may have fallen out or isn't sealing.
um , silly question . would i make any difference that the new engine was previously mounted to a 5 speed..? cheers all
shouldn't, as long as the ringgear and torque converter are attached and spinning with the engine it'd be fine (the spigot bush was removed from the crank?)
