Looking at that i doubt the wiring loom is going to be much good, i'd be skeptical about service history as the air bag didn't deploy with such a major collision.

Would you trust a 20yo airbag anyway ?

This was part of an insurance damaged vehicle sale. In SA, a service or inspection is not required for rego as in other states.
The VR wagon this engine will go into has not seen a mechanic for over 8 years apart from getting the AC re-gassed about 6 years ago.

As I wanted to fix this car cheaply, after looking for the past 3 weeks, I could not get a V6 engine for under $500 with accessories required.
Anything with a warranty started at $750 for a bare engine and then plus any accessories required.
If I was going to spend any more, this VR wagon would have just been scrapped as it would not be worth it.

Wiring loom will not be changed, planing to keep the VR loom.
From the link posted earlier by Jxw, I will only need to drill and mount the intake temp sensor, the rest will be bolt on parts only.
Remove and refit all the other VR engine sensors to the VS motor.
Did also read the TPS may need some wires swapped over.
Current VR intake pipe could be modified to suit ecotec motor.

Well yes i would trust it, if there was a fault the srs liight would be on so i'd fix it, instead of continuing to drive it.
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the amount of cars i've been in with srs or cel lights on in just the last few years, the owners don't fix it "because it costs to much" and it still drives.

First pic - now in my yard, front bumper pulled off
second pic - after about 1 hour with the help of my gas axe
third pic - off to the car wash for a hose down

Only damage i can see to engine is a broken idler pulley and coil pack both took a bit of a hit.
Can use coil pack and module off the VR engine.
Will also replace the water pump while it is out.

I'm currently in the process of putting ecotec in my VR, got the motor in and running.. yet to install the exhaust and seems like my trans is slipping.
Pretty simple swap over, Mostly plug and play.. I found 2 plugs were different but nothing to worry about. I used a memcal to disable VATS..
Interested to see how you go with it..

Things to do:
- Swap the accelerator cable
- Fit VR trans to VS motor
- remove VS sump, clear sludge from pick-up, refit with new gasket
- purchase new water pump, idler pulley, radiator hoses, transmission oil
- already have engine oil and oil filter to fit to VS motor
- Fit MAT sensor to Ecotec plenum

Not sure yet if the stock VR Y pipe will bolt up to the VS stock exhaust manifolds. Cannot use the VS Y pipe as it will not connect to VR wagon exhaust.
Was going to chop the original VR intake pipe to fit the Ecotec throttle body.

I spoke to a guy ages ago who had put a supercharged Ecotech into a VR and he was running it on the VR ECU. He said to me that the only disadvantage of this is the Ecotech fuel injectors will just burst fire like the Buick engines and you don't need to wire up the cam angle sensor as there isn't provision for that in the VR Buick harness.
So the only bad result would be you wouldn't get as good fuel economy keeping the VR harness and ECU.
Did you consider replacing any of the welsh plugs while it was out just in case they were corroded or the rear seal in case it was leaking?

Thanks for reminding me about the Welch plugs. Haven't even dropped the auto off either motor yet.

Went to buy a sump gasket on the way home from work today and was told they need the engine number as there were 2 possibilities it could be.

Looks like I won't get anything done tonight as both kids had immunizations today and they are both very cranky.
