I cannot select gears in my VS V6 auto (124.000Ks). At first the change from first to second became laboured and sluggish. This coincided with an occassional vibrating noise. About a week later smoke poured from under the bonnet as the fluid was spat out the filler tube over the exhaust manifold and left an oil trail to home. The fluid level is still ok, so must have been overfull I guess. Does anyone have any clues?

It is a bit unusual to have a tranny crapped itself at 124,000K's
I mean my car has done 219,000k's and still on original tranny!!!
Do you drive hard?? May be try and get it serviced see if that helps and chuck in a tranny cooler while you're at it.
Do simply things first before you spend big $$.
It might be simple as replacing the gear solenoids.

Certainly sounds like a full overhaul is the next step. You should take it to a reputable auto specialist who will drive the vehicle, maybe drop the pan and give a report....but from your description it don't sound good. Figure on spending just under $2000 unfortunately or get a 2nd hand one. But I hope it ain't so. Good Luck.

sounds like a pretty serious failure and time for a rebuild. possibly a pump failure.
