I have acquired a VS Series 2 (V6) with auto and got the tranny serviced recently. The auto transmission service people tell me its not locking up in top gear and they reckon the auto clutch/torque converter is no good (they showed me the red clutch material in the filter plus the usual metal in the pan). Their solution is a reconditioned box, priced between $1500 and $2400.

My question is - why do I need an entire new box, can't the torque convertor just be replaced? If so, is this easy to do? I'm mechanically confident enough to do it if its just a pull it out and replace job however I know jack-all about autos.

    Thanks in advance.

My opinion only, but if it drives OK and you have not personally noticed the TCC not locking up then I'd continue driving it till it gets worse. For the money involved you can almost buy another VS. You can also buy reco transmissions which include the TC and fit the entire box yourself....or get a 2nd hand one or one from the wreckers. Good Luck.
