Hey guys, this problem just happened over night. It worked fine before turning the car off, go in this morning and no dice. It has all the gears, in D it shifts fine and starting off in 1st working my way up works fine. But as soon as i want to drop back a gear using the shifter manually, to engine brake, it doesnt work anymore, its like it finds a false neutral. Iv searched the forums and found the following: "if you want a manual, buy a manual" and "its bad for your auto, dont do it" I dont want to hear about that, im just looking for possible causes so i can do a fix untill it does get a T5 conversion kit. I use the engine brake as with the amount of driving i do i dont want to rip through pads and rotors as the rotors are already warped and their not even a year old. Any help would be great, thanks.
It sounds like a broken/worn out overrun clutch, or the lugs have broken off the overrun hub of the input sprag. Both of these parts failing is very common in the 4L60E. I also drive my auto like a manual, and it doesnt get driven lightly either,so I keep it serviced regularly. Every 20,000 km I change the trans filter and fluid and I run a trans cooler. So far since I got the car, its done around 200,000 km, It still shifts etc as good as the day I got the car, theres hardly any lag when going from neutral to drive or reverse etc, I think the frequent fluid and filter changes keeps the trans seals and other parts healthier for longer.
I have never had any problem downshifting in mine either. I never downshift into first though, thats a big no no. I will always drop it down to 3rd and 2nd in the decent into Adelaide down the steep freeway. Mine has done 340,000 and still going strong (trans cooler, corvette, serviced every 15-20000km) (In my camry daily I shift manually all day every day....even down into first, gotta love having a car I don't care about....250,000 and still shifting like the day I bought it)
Its not that bad to drop right down into 1st with 4L60e, If you are doing over a certain speed it just doesn't change down.
Its strange, it was working 100% fine right up untill this morning. I did discover on the way home today that if i down shifted and tapped the acc pedal it would then drop down, but thats pretty dangerous to do in the wet as itll just skid the rear end past the front of my car (rolling to power at the wheels), could this still be what your describing The1? H A manual driver had troubles figuring out how get the car to go forwards, neutral dropped it at 1.5k However, a 1.5k neutral drop shouldnt do that sort of damage, as i was not driving that night i have no idea if it happened after that. Looks like im up for yet another auto. 3rd time lucky you think? I know the old saying "when you upgrade your engine, you should do the box to match" But a few bolts ons to always kill an stock auto? Thanks for your replys tho.
