The car does not over heat - nor has the radiator lost water / dropped in water... Issue is i just noticed the overflow bottle is empty could this be more to do with the heat??.. in general (weather being so hot)?.. I have no water leaks no water in the oil...
Is it a 6 or 8. If it's a 6 the inlet manifold gaskets are renowned for having issues. Fill up the over flow again and monitor it.
Its a 6 but wouldnt it be milky and wouldnt the radiator be empty? or lower than normal?... in my case as i said its just the radiator (overflow) bottle thats empty - would it be from the outside temperature bieng so hot (evaporating)..
Fill the overflow bottle to the full cold mark and monitor the level. As the engine heats the radiator cap will allow a small amount of coolant into the overflow to maintain the correct cooling system pressure. Once the engine is shut down and cools, coolant is drawn back into the coolant system past radiator cap. You will need to monitor the overflow tank level over a period of time. Thinks like intake manifold gaskets that are starting to fail will only loose a very small amount of coolant at any time. Small amounts of coolant in the oil won't go milky, rather as the oil heats to operating temperature the coolant is actually boiled off and burnt in the combustion process through the PCV system.
It has had all new gaskets radiator - hoses the lot. Thats why i am not sure as to why its just the overflow bottle loosing water... and not the radiator.
I'd still pressure test the system and cap. Coolant could be weeping into the combustion chamber through the head gasket or a cylinder bore.
Yes i do understand what you are saying... But wouldnt the radiator itself , be lower than normal ??... if there was a gasket leak or a weep anywhere?.
Maybe your cooling system isn't making enough pressure to unseat the relief valve and allowing the coolant back to the overflow bottle. With the engine cold, preferably in the morning before driving, fill the overflow and radiator and check both levels again the next morning. What pressure rating is the radiator cap?
Well being , its a complete system , from hoses to radiator to cap all from holden i would only think , its all standard.... But as i said , could it be evaparating , as it has never done it before , and the radiator itself has not lost water......
The coolant would have to be bingo boiling hot for it to just 'disappear'. So every time you check the overflow bottle, it's empty. Correct?
no its been over a 6 mth period thats what im asking , does it ever need to be topped up (occasionally)? or is something you simply fill and walk away and only replace on your next change over in the complete system
The cooling system arrangement on the Commodores is setup so you don't have to regularly check it. That's what the overflow bottle is there for, a reservoir for extra coolant when required for the radiator and engine block.
