Hey guys,

Okay, this is weird. I've done a search, and have read a couple of threads that are similar to this, however they proved to be of no real help.

The past few days, it sounds like there is a tiny supercharger in the dashboard of my VS Calais. The "whining" sound seems to be coming from inside the dashboard, at first I thought it was the air-con, however it is still present when the A/C is off.

The whine's volume seems to be conducive to the current engine revs. Its pretty quiet, and as i put the throttle down and the engine revs higher, the whine gets higher in pitch and a bit louder.

All vacuum hoses on the intake seem to be fine, the gearbox oil is fine (read this possibility in another thread), and i have no ideas what else it could be.

Anyone got any ideas? Much appreciated, thanks.

Yes we have a Vr and a VS with the same problem.
After searching for many hours we finally tracked it down.
Upon opening the bonnet of both car much to out surprise the modification gnomes had snuck in to out shed one night and fitted Superchargers to both our cars..
I suspect that's what may of happened to you.

lol, I wish the modification gnomes would randomly show up and Install a Supercharger in my car.

Assuming the car isn't supercharged, when exactly did it start?, have you changed anything? also exactly where in the dash is it coming from?.

Most commodores 6's n/a have a faint whining sound when you give them a rev, so are you sure it is from the dash and not the Engine?

Lol, i to wish the gnomes had given me a free supercharger!

But, i've only noticed it in the past couple of days. It's possible it's been there the entire time and i simply never heard it for before, but doubtful since i've had the car for over 5 years now.
I have been doing some work to it lately, about a month ago a mate and i replaced most of the gaskets in the engine, it wasnt doing it before or after that until a couple of days ago that i'm aware of.
Since that the cars been absolutely terrific.
Otherwise i've only replaced the engine oil and filter, and the plugs and leads.
While driving it does sound like its coming from the center A/C vents in the center of the dash, however it may very well be from the engine and it simply sounds like the source is in the dash due to the vents. It's not loud so with the windows down while driving i cant hear it.

Oh, and I've also replaced the Canister Purge Solenoid, that was only about a week ago.
The old one was faulty (or at least stuck open/or closed), thus giving me error code 97, and my mate had a spare lying around that worked fine, put that in and no more error code (and now it isnt hesitating when i give it some throttle like it did before). So i doubt, or at least hope, that it isnt that. But, i guess, is it possible that it's the solenoid? (the vacuum hoses are on and there's no cracks that i can see).

Thanks for the quick responses guys. It isnt really annoying or anything, i actually like the sound lol but i'd just like to make sure there's nothing wrong.

I would first try turning on the fan and going through all the fan speeds and listen if there is a stronger whining sound through the vents if not, slightly rev it from the throttle body so you can listen if there is a whine from the engine and locate the area it is coming from.

Nah it wasnt the radio Dakster.
When i went for a drive today i couldnt hear the sound at all. Strange that it was persistent for a few days and now all of a sudden it's stopped.
If it starts up again, i'll do what you said hsv91ss, and will see if i can find anything.

Cheers guys

lol no worries, just thought I would mention it coz sometimes its easy to miss the obvious :) You will get noises that rise and fall with the engine etc if you have interference with the radio of course.
I sometimes get noises that come from the climate control system too, but they are more whistling than whining, and not as obviously rising and falling with the engine, though they do up to a point. Of course these go away when the climate control is turned off, so that doesn't fit your problem I guess.
