I cant imagine any way this would cause first gear to be tight. Probably more so in the adjustment of the clutch cable if its a T5. If its a Getrag box then I know the rubber bushes under the shifter mounting area are prone to excessive wear resulting in the shifter being a bit loose and able to be wobbled side to side when in a gear. If this is the case I have been told it can contribute to first gear being tight and hard to get at times.

Should also make sure you are getting a full travel in the clutch pedal, i.e. dont have any really thick floor mats under it that stop it from hitting the floor. Just a thought.

I have not actually replaced these rubbers on my shifter yet so i've got no idea about the price sorry. Cant imagine they would be too much, maybe $40 at a random guess.
