Hi Guys,

Any help will be highly appreciated, i have purchased my little brother his first car for his birthday today and the car now wont start.

The Key will go into the barrel but will not turn at all.

I have jiggled it moved the car back an forward, moved the steering wheel (side to side), the wheel will turn all the way like the steering lock is not working??

Any ideas that i can try to get this car working for him.

Thank You

what a nice person you are, buying your little brother his first car. you sir are a gentleman.

I had this same problem in my statesman a while back, the steering lock would not engage and the ignition jammed. I could get mine to work with a little bit of force though. either way a new igntion barrel is on the cards. it's a easy job to do and the barrels are readily available and aren't that expensive either. there are heaps of how to's on the forum so just do a quick search.

As Ichris mentioned, it's definitely a barrel issue, holden sell barrels to suit your key, I've heard they're around the $80 mark, I got a basic one from bursons for $30, but it has it's own key, so I have to use 2 keys.

Ideally, you need to get the key into acc, (try some talcum powder) if it's impossible to get it there, it's a column apart job with the major pain in the arse being it has a shear bolt.

I spent 1 1/2 hour getting this bolt out!

If you need help, pm me, I'm more than happy to talk you through it.

As said above plus
you can try and remove the plastic electrical switch from the rear of the barrel, if your lucky the tabs broken off the barrel assembly and is jamming the switch common problem
this will allow you to get the key to the accessory position to remove the barrel...be careful of some of the cheap aftermarket ones, as they have a very rough casting and will need a fair bit of gental sanding/grinding to get them to slide in without a sledge hammer
