Hey all,

Sorry if its a noob question. But just lately over the last 2 days my car has started to leak oil from the oil filter.
The car is a vs v6 with 165,000 on the clock with full service history up to 120,000. I purchased it late last year of the original owners son with 158,000 on the clock.

So about a month ago i did a full service on the car including:
-oil
-oil filter
-fuel filter
-air filter
-o2 sensor
-spark plugs and leads
-timing belt
-radiator flush
-power steering flush
-tranny oil and filter

Engine oil is 20w/50 as specified in the owners manual and the oil filter is a ryco z154?? Now i just got a new filter tonight and did it up according to the directions as i thought i might of overtightened the other filter when i put it on. But it is still leaking.
So i have now used an oil filter tool to do it up tighter than normal and it is still leaking but not as bad as before.
I have checked to make sure that it is not coming from the sump and the rear main seal was replaced 20,000 k's ago.
So at the moment i am really stumped.

Any help or suggestions would be great

Cheers guys/gals

You should only do up oil filters hand tight no need to do them up with oil filter tools as you can damage the rubber seal

Did the old rubber seal come off with the oil filter? Sometimes they say on the edge of the oil outlet and doesn't let the new filter and o-ring seal correctly.

Pull it off and check they first, then check the filter round the edge so see if the casing is coming apart

Did you apply oil to the o-ring seal?
I reckon it's cracked on the housing.

I winced when I read that you've used the filter wrench to tighten the oil filter. Doing that can force the metal lip on the oil filter into the oil filter sealing face on the engine.

Try removing the oil filter and take a look at the machined surface that the oil filter seal contacts. That should be smooth across its surface. Because the oil filter has been replaced an unknown number of times, and probably over tightened some of those times, it probably won't be. A small amount of damage you can get away with but if it's a lot then the oil filter adaptor can be replaced. I think that it's only a few (3 or 4?) bolts and a gasket. One of the bolts is behind the oil filter.

You might be lucky and it's just the oil filter that has distorted and is not clamping the seal evenly. In that case replacing the oil filter should fix it.

Also, when you replaced the oil filter you should have applied a film of oil to the seal to allow the seal to spin against the adaptor sealing surface until the filter is done up. (Maybe you did but < is why.)

Just to clarify i took the old filter off and the seal was intact and still sitting perfectly level in the filter. When i put the new one on tonight i did grease up the o-ring seal and put the filter on by hand as per instructions which was hand tight and it was leaking. But the thing i dont understand is when i put the previous filter on over a month ago it was working fine and no leaks were present. But since thursday morning it has been leaking.
Has anyone had similar problems with ryco filters?? Only asking as i have heard both good and bad things about them.

Cheers

Can U see where its leaking from?

U may have got a dodgy one, I've never had an issue with em, but there's always a bad batch with every brand

Dont know if they are the same as v8 but the shaft where the filter screws on can unwind as unscrew the old one.Found this out on mine, but like I said it is a v8.

Okay i will get another filter tomorrow and check the area where the filter mounts up to make sure that it is smooth as suggested. Also i just changed the oil today and its only done about 50'ks. Will i have to replace the oil or is it okay to drain the oil in the engine and re-use it and just top up what is needed???

Cheers
