Hi

ive had this problem for about 6-8 months now on my VS commodore and it only seems to be getting worse the more i drive :(

the problem i have is that it takes about 10- 20 seconds for my car to come out of Park and then into Drive. After i have managed to get into Drive i have to tease the car to change gears and back of the accelerator or i find myself just over revving. only about a month ago has it started getting worse and to the point were i have to start of in 1st and then manually move it back into Drive. the problem is still the same even after the car is warmed up and been on the road for a while. the car has done 270,000 Ks

what i have done so far to try and fix the problem is
replace the oil
replaced the oil filter
put in some transmission fluid

yet none of this has done anything to help my situation :(

does anybody have the same problems?
do i need to go to a mechanic?
or is it that my transmission or gear box has finally had it and i need a re build?

thanks :)

You say:
"what i have done so far to try and fix the problem is

It appears you've changed the engine oil/filter and topped up the transmission oil (but I may be misinterpreting your post).....you really need to change the transmission fluid and the transmission filter, unless that is what you have already. If the existing/old fluid is black and smells burnt then that's a good indication the trans is in dire need of a service.
A blocked trans fluid filter may cause your problems otherwise it's as nathanVS says. You can do this yourself at a cost of about $70 for fluid/filter. Otherwise it's off to a specialist and about $2000 for a reco one fitted unfortunately.

my old box had a delay between park and drive, about 1 seconds though not 10-20 and was shifting fine. I lent it to a friend who was unaware of the gap between park and drive he held the revs up and bang blew the crap out of the box when it finally grapped drive. The delay is normally caused by a worn revere - drive clutch and the problem in shifting could be the solenoids, bands etc. I ended up getting a box from the wrecker with 120,000km on it fitted and serviced for $700 with 6 months warranty.

Much cheaper then having a reconditioned box , though if you have it rebuilt request that they use a stronger sun shell as they are a common failure in all 4l60e boxes.

yes you have got it correct that's all i did but i havent replaced the transmission filter. is there a guide on changing the transmission filter available?

looks like i might need to take it to a specalist for them to have a proper look. well aparently the car is only worth 3500 so in most cases if it does need a reco then ill sell it and get myself a VZ wagon

To change the transmission filter and fluid-
The new transmission filter kit will come with a new pan gasket and filter seal. These filter kits cost from $20-$30,you also need 5lt of dexron 111 auto transmission fluid, probably another $20 -$30.
You just place something to catch the old fluid under the transmission pan, then remove the transmission pan bolts except for a couple at the front of the pan, then slowly loosen the front bolts that were left in,and drain the fluid that runs out the rear of the pan into the container, the rest of the fluid will stay in the pan,so keep it level while you fully remove the leftover bolts from the pan.
Then after removing the leftover bolts completely, lower the pan and drain the rest of the old fluid out of it.You will see a magnet stuck to the bottom of the pan, probably with slimey goo covering it,just clean this magnet, pull it off the bottom of the pan,but remember when replacing it ,make sure it goes back in the square embossed part of the pan that indicates where the magnet sits.
Once the pan and magnet are clean, you will see the old filter hanging down, you will know what it looks like from looking at the new filter anyway, you just pull this filter firmly out of its locating hole on the transmission. The seal will probably stay up in the hole, but not always,so if it does,I just remove it by carefully crushing the old seal inwards with a screwdriver, being careful not to scratch the sides of the hole where the seal goes.
Once the old seal is out, put the new seal on the new filter and push it firmly up into the filter locating hole. You will feel it slide into place, double check that the filter is firmly pushed home,
Then you just gotta fit the new pan gasket and tighten up the pan again.Make sure you dont tighten the pan bolts more than 11 Nm,or basically just nipped up,if they are tightened up too much it will crush the cork gasket and it will leak.Just refill the transmission then, and after checking the fluid level when cold, check it again after its warmed up to make sure its the right level..
If youve changed the engine oil and filter before and find it easy, you can do the transmission filter and fluid, theres nothing hard about it at all.

There will be a "how-to" on changing the filter/fluid...do a search and check the How-to section. Most specialists will advise a reco as it's not in their interests to repair an old box which may fail in 2 days time, so they would rather reco the entire box and give a warranty. You may find the value of your car is much less than $3500 with a dud auto.....not sure where in Australia you live but in SE Qld with a dud auto it would be worth under $1000 plus it will not sell quick, so it should be in your interest to fix it then sell/keep - these are my opinions only but I try to tell it how it is.

transmission kickdown slipping

I also have this similar problem, where my transmission slips and over revs before engaging when kicking down gears while accelerating.
I have performed the required service and fluid check..

Is it likely to be the torqueconverter or the transmission itself??

Does an additive like "transmission fix' from supercheap likely to help this problem?

Sounds like the bands/clutches are getting worn. If you're going to use an additive use lubeguard, sometimes this may help the problem but if there is damage to the transmission it won't do much at all. See a transmission specialist, have a search around there is a list of 4L60e faults and fixes somewhere, it may be on another forum so try searching google :)

Thanks , I will try the additive first as I donnot wish to spend money on the car.
Do you know if the s2 box will fit my s1 statesman without any mods?
