    Hey all!

So, the anti-depressants have kicked in and I've finally stopped moping around long enough to write this despreate cry for help. Last Friday my trans slipped a couple of times. I didn't worry about it too much, just put it down to being cold. Checked the fluid levels, everything seems to be in order.

Throughout the next few days it seemed to get progressively worse. Started slipping whilst warm and hot and by this point, I was checking the fluid levels religiously. Everything was still fine, levels were OK and the fluid wasn't cooked.

    Gearbox-2, Danny-0

Last night I decided to drive into town with a mate for a photo shoot. On the way there, I was accelerating in 1st gear and the box was reaching up to 3000rpm with very little response. No stally. The photoshoot, unlike the drive there, was a fantastic success and on the way home the bloody thing stalled when I tried to accelerate from a set of lights. Marvellous.

I made it home, but the box is in a bad way. Drives like an absolute pig. The box has a Shift Kit and a Corvette Servo, and has had or about 2 months now. I'm going to get grilled for this, but I definitely haven't given the trans the care that I should have - filter hasn't been replaced for 20,000Ks.

    Gearbox-10, Danny-0

So what are your thoughts? Should I #### around with servicing/filters/fluids etc? Or would it be better to just cut my losses and replace the damned thing.

Any help is appreciated, as I need it for work and I'm running out of hair to tear out.

    CHEERS! LONG LIVE THE 4L60E!

step 1: check for error codes
step 2: full service, filter, fluid and throw some of the nulon transmission treatment in there when you refill it, it's easy and cheaper than other options.

Is the speedo working correctly while it's misbehaving?

How do you go about checking trans error codes? Never had to do it before. Is it the same principle as engine codes?

Hard to tell if the speedo is working correctly, since my diff gears have thrown it out pretty bad. I'm fairly sure it's still working properly when the trans is messing about though.

How many kilometres on the car?

It may be nearing the end of its useful life.

Replacing the gearbox maybe more than the value of the car.

    Is it worth it ?

More relevant questions required with relevant answers and for you to make the assessment.

The pin bridging technique shows you the codes for the engine and trans

Car's done 215,000 - hasn't had a particularly hard life, especially compared to most other examples around these days. Bought the car for 2500 and have dumped more money than I should have into it since then, so it's definitely worth more than the $500 for a replacement gearbox.

Thought it was just a matter of time before you found this thread :p Might have to bring it past your place one day and we'll attack it with scissors...that is, assuming it makes it all the way there :/

i have a v6 vn with 240K on the clock (original engine & trans), both myself and the previous owner give/gave it a hard time (basically the same guts in the trans as a vr/vs for the important bits), 20,000 km's ago it started slipping and missing gears, i put a corvette servo, larger boost valve (upped the line pressure basically) and fresh fluid (with some trans treatment) in it (actually flushed and changed the oil twice as the first time without the vette servo and boost valve cooked the oil within half a day)..... since all that it's still going and hasn't slipped since, at the time i think it ended up costing me $180-$200, cheaper and less hassle than changing the trans and the end result was a driveable car, good old bandaid's :)

this trans was in a lot worse condition than your description, if i wasn't so lazy i would've changed it, but i had a case of the cbf's when i thought about the manual lifting and labor if i wasn't getting paid to do it lol.

the car i used for the above example is going to cost me more than market value to fix up properly, (last count was 3K, small things that don't work properly and a new engine and trans at some point when the current finally gives up being patched up) but it's a straight unsmashed calais and for a long time i wanted one, people will say i'm mad for spending the cash but at the end of the day when it's a car you want and like it is worth more than market value.
