Hi, just bought the ute but have two problems that my mechanic haven't fixed, one is every time I get stuck in traffic the temp.gauge keeps going up to 3/4 even in cold weather and the other problem when it changes in top gear it has this noise sounds like vibration, could any one help please.:
Re the temp going to 3/4 - this is normal and due to the VS having an electric fan which only switches on when the engine heats up. When the car is in motion there is sufficient air passing thru the radiator to cool it, but when stopped there is no air thru the radiator. Re the vibration - manual or auto? (sounds like manual but...) PS....welcome to the forum.
Hey mate with the vibration at speed it could b your tailshaft vibrating at speed..maybe get that looked at
Thanks guys, I changed the radiator, hoses, thermostat and redid the heater all ready for Summer, but with the vibration I did change the tailshaft, it's an auto, only does it going up a hill or as it changes to top gear,as it happens I exelerate harder and it goes, I can drive slow and it's ok .
My ute does the same thing when going up hills at around 80kms And accelerating but if I back off it stops. I had it looked at and was told that there's nothing wrong with the car it's just because I don't have a resonator on the exhaust. So I've learned to live with it because I don't want to quieten the car down. Hope this is the only reason yours is doing it
I was reading a post about this temp gauge problem on the VS not too long ago on here, this guy went to holden and got a new temp gauge sender, and it made his temp gauge read up to 3/4 instead of where its "normally" meant to be at half way ,where the cooling fan usually cuts in..He went back, and holden then told him that they had released a revised temp sender unit for the VS to fix the problem. He got this revised temp sender ,and he said it fixed it,and the cooling fan is now cutting in at around half way on the temp gauge instead at 3/4 or higher. Some people say its normal for the VS temp gauge to run this high,if it were me,Id be worried that I wouldnt notice it in time if the engine got hot or overheated. Most temp gauges read anywhere between cold and half way at operating temp..Not at 3/4 or more.Running normally at 3/4 on the temp gauge doesnt leave much margin for error. My VS cooling fan cuts in around half way when idling in traffic. When driving along,it usually sits on the second or third mark on the gauge, even lower on a cool night.
My VS Sedan used to do the same thing. Scared the crap out of me when it first went that high! I replaced the thermostat with a lower temp one and now when driving the temp sits at 2 or 3 mark. At the lights it still climbs up, but I have an over-ride switch installed which allows me to turn the fan on earlier As for the vibration, I have that at the moment, I think it is a stuffed torque converter. Does your gearbox lock when at 100kms? (revs should sit below 2000 at 100km per hour)
