Hi Guys, I need help in regards to my Holden VS 1997. The Horn Pad won't work properly and decided to have a closer look by taking off the 4 screws that is holding it. Found out that the plastic thing that holds the screw is crack and therefore no longer holding the 4 screws properly. I decided to go to a wrecker and got the exact one, put it in and still wont work properly. I noticed that whenever I turn the steering wheel (Engine running) it works OK. Open it up again and check the wiring and found out that the purple coloured wire is hanging and not connected elsewhere. Could anyone give me an idea what that purple coloured wire is? Not sure if it's earth. Thanks
Strange - no purple wire shown in my wiring diagram. Also all VS Commodores (I think) had drivers airbag as standard....and the Esteem is upmarket so it should have had one as even the common Executive had one although I know export models may not have had them fitted. Your 2nd paragraph says "I noticed that whenever I turn the steering wheel (Engine running) it works OK." ----yet you say it still doesn't work properly. So....more info needed
No most VS's did not have a airbag. A drivers airbag was standard on Berlinas while duel airbags were standard an Acclaims. All other models had airbags as an optional addition.
Trying to remember, but there are two wires that go to the horn pad of which one is an earth that should have a square shaped crimp conection on it's end. This crimp connection just plugs into the little square hole in boss of steering wheel. If this wire is loose it could be your problem.
hey i have a similar prob in my 94 vr exec, i recently took the plastic bits ont eh steering colum off for painting then when i put it all back on my horn doesnt work...at all. is this a similar prob? i'm guessing i have pulled a wire loose when i was taking the plastic on and off yes? also how hard would it be to install an airhorn in its place? any help would be great, cheers
2 year old thread but any way, you need a new horn contact, the little copper (?) rubbing block (for the non air bag unit) is more than likley worn out. holden used to sell it a year a go but good luck now, might try rare spairs or someone simmaler.
lol gotta love bringing the two year old threads back ahahaha and rare spares that doesnt sound cool seems like my car s from 1960 lol but i know what you mean thanx mate
ok guys i just fixed this purple wire problem what it is is a small square hole in the wheel that it plugs in to but the reason for the horn not working is the plastic ring moves and doesn't make contact with the brass plate in side Ur column cover so just put a few screws in the three plastic bungs just push it back and put a few screws in it to hold it back and it works well
