hey guys me mate has a v6 vs and we are thinking of cleaning the inlet manifold ...like take the top of and clean the inside... now i know there is a gasket but will he need to replace this? or will it be alright to use the old one? as im pretty sure its a rubber gasket....if so how much would one be worth
You're wasting your time. Yes, the gasket will need to be replaced, it will be damaged as the manifold is removed. No it is not all rubber. From memory its something like $60, I can pull the receipt out and tell you the price if you really want. Its not an easy job. Coolant needs to be drained, alternator removed etc etc. Theres a fair bit to get it off, not as easy as a couple of bolts. The inside of the manifold does not seem to be coated like the throttle body does. Clean the throttle body if you havent already, theres plenty of crap in there to come out. You will find in the manifold though that there is very little to clean, a lot of work and unnecessary expense.
Yeah, its a pani in the arse, i just did one a month ago as i had one leaking oil into my radiator. Its alot of work just to clean it. Take the top off, take the plenum off as well if you like, the throttle and plenum are the worst, so take off the plenum top and plug the holes and spray with nulon throttle cleaner, melts it all away. Then Spray it down the runners, put the top on, start it up, idle slowly, 2000 max i think, and spray into your intake piping, that will clean all the runners anyway in the manifold. When i tried cleaning mine when it was off, its a real pain, the only way i can see to clean it properly is to soak it in some degreaser. But anway, the runners that far down in the intake are only slightly coated in varnish, nothing major to affect flow. Yes in the plenum, and throttle its real bad.
OK, parts and prices from VR. Assume that VS is the same: You need one for each side of the engine, so 2 in total. You should also replace the seals at the front and back. These are rubber, so you could reuse them, but you do risk creating problems that you didnt start with: Gasket intake manifold: GM-25534226 2 @ $32.68 = $65.36 +GST Seal intake manifold: GM-25535221 2 @ $7.83 = $15.66 +GST Total cost = $89.10 (inc GST) + coolant, unless you reuse the coolant = Not cheap just to give it a bit of a clean
if you just take the plenum of you should get away with keeping the gaskest their like a o ring id just do the plenum and tb
ah ok thanks guys...well i was only gonna take the top off ....u know that plat that is held down but allen head bolts...pleum i think it is.....they have a orin type gasket....what are they worth?
