VS Petrol Pump

    Hi Everyone,

    My petrol pump has died and I am not sure how to get to it. Do I have to drop the tank or is there an easier way??

    It's quite easy, just did mine about a month ago, first disconect battery then jack up the rear of the car, use chasis stands or something similar, unplug the wireing at the tank end, then remove the fuel hoses from the filter etc, be carefull you dont get a face full of fuel, then all you need to do is undo the five bolts that hold the fuel pump in the tank, slowly pull it out twisting it in a clockwise direction, the tricky bit is the return hose from the sender unit back into the tank that is all that is stopping it from coming out, tie a pice of wire aroud it and remove the retaining clip then you should be able to manouver the whole thing out of the tank, changing the pump is easy, put it all back the way it came out, then buy yourself a new fuel filter $10.00 job done, it took me about an hour and I am a novice.

    did mine in January 4 hours including taking the tank out.
    did the sons last month 45 minutes including a cuppa in the middle.
    take your time and make sure the tank is very low, at least under 1/8

    But! If your situation is like mine was and your pump has failed, you might have more fuel in there than you want.
    My mechanic used a small electric pump to completely empty the tank first.
    Sure, he charges by the hour, but my ute doesn't stink of fuel for it either!

    I am pretty sure there could be a faster way to get most of the juice out of the tank but I definitely recommend changing the pump with as little fuel in the tank as possible.

    I had to change a tank on a VN at work and it had 1/4 petrol in it, i just undid the fuel pump and let out all the petrol come out from there. its faster than through a hose, u just got to make sure that u hav a really big container sitting rite beneath the tank where the pump is cos it just gushes out

    the job is easy as unless u want to take the tank out and clean it....

    one thing though is to make sure u take the fuel pump fuse out and crank her over a few times until it dies...... i forgot to do it and got 5 seconds worth of fuel spraying everywhere when i disconnected the hoses from the pump....

    lol its always easy to forget something but i wouldnt crank it u could damage it easily

    actually cranking it is the correct thing to do. According to the service manual, you should remove the fuel pump fuse and start the car. It will stop after a few seconds because the fuel pump isnt running, then you should crank the starter for at least 30 seconds to make sure the pressure in the lines is relieved. Pressurised fuel lines can be dangerous if you remove them without doing this.
