Ok ladies and gents I got a bit of a question regarding my future car. As some may no im in the process of looking for and saving money for a VS Clubsport. Ive got my heart set on a manual, i dont really want to be driving an automatic v8 and there lies my question. Whats the difference between the T5 transmission in the Series 1 compared to the Getrag in the Series 2? Ive been told the Getrag costs FAR more when in need of a new clutch but other than that im fairly clueless. Ive been told to if possible get a T5 and i was just looking for some other opinions.
The Getrag boxes are terrible... Cant handle the power very well. The T5s are much better.... There is also some logic which states.... Its better to have the last of an old model, than the first of a new model. The T5 had been around for quite a few years betime the VS was released... So holden had lots of time to perfect it. Whereas the Getrag was brand new in the S2, so if there are going to be issues with it, it would be on that model. It was the same with the Gen3 V8s... The early VT/VX models had bad piston slap. (Obviously the Gen3 is better than the EFI304, but you get what im saying).
Cheers for that feistl. The issue i have is, I find a hell of a lot more Series II manuals than Series I, spose i got a bit of time to wait though so ill find one.
Well i guess the other option would be to get a S2 or S3 and if/when it brakes, change over to a T5... There was a T5 for sale on this forum (i think) which was designed for Ecotec engines. Just an idea. The Getrag was bad.... But not bad enough to warrant avoiding all VS S2 utes. I mean if you have 2 identical cars together, go the T5. But worst case, the Getrag will still be ok. Depending on price, might even be worth buying an auto and doing a conversion... It normally costs around $1000-1500. So if you can get a S3 V8 Auto cheap, might work out the better option. Good Luck.
