if you don't want it to sound **** then stick with your initial plan of 6"s in the rear. If your going to have a sub, 6"s in the rear sound better than 6 x 9's. If your not going to have a sub, use 6 x 9's in the rear to give you SOME bass.

Put the 5s in the rear or some cheap 6-6.5 inch coax and run them off the head unit. Get some decent 6-6.5 inch splits for the front and a 4 channel amp to run them and the sub. You won't miss the rears.

IMO, the front splits are by far the most important thing in the system. Everything else should be chosen to match/compliment them. So choose an amp to match the splits and then choose a sub to suit the bridged channels 3+4 of the 4 channel. Usually best with a 4 ohm load, so single voice coil 4 ohm or dvc 2 ohm. Power rated about the same as the amps output.

My 2 cents...cheers

okok, so... what your saying is to use the 6ers i got for the back n go buy some splits n use them for the front. can i just run all them off the h/u for the time being? then when i get some cash, buy an amp n sub n then run the splits n sub off the amp yeah?
yeah im still tryna learn about all this stuff n dont really have a clue about bridging n ohms atm but im getting there, lol so yeah i should just go out n buy some mad splits for the time being yeah?

Yeah you've pretty much got the idea there now. Sound from up front is alot more important than sound at the back. You'll actually find there's heavy debate over whether rear speakers actually make your system sound better or worse. So yeah, for the time being grab some nice splits for up front. If you still want rears, get some later but don't go spending a fortune when that money could be better put to the front splits. Then if you do have rears, fade them out so they're just for 'fill' sound. As you said, when you then get an amplifier, run your front splits from 2 channels and bridge 2 channels for the sub leaving any rear speakers running off the headunit. For the time being until you can afford an amp though running your front splits and any rears you may get off your headunit will suffice.

Cheers, Bryce.

Yep, thats the go. Bit by bit and get the best quality stuff (in your opinion) you can fit in your budget. Make a cd of your favorite tracks and go audition some splits. Pick the ones that sound best to you. Look for brands such as focal, boston acoustics, mb quart, hertz, morel, DLS... etc. Do a search for other brands as well.

Jaycar kevlar splits are ok for the money (~$160) if money is tight. I have also heard that JVC make some $200 splits that are very good for the money. Some of the specialist brands above also have entry level stuff around $250. Expect to pay ~$500 for good quality mid range splits though. $800 to over $1k for excellent ones. Try to find stuff on special. Alpine have some very good value pakages at the moment. Maybe you might like the sound of their speakers, personally i don't. Although the type x are ok. I prefer the focal sound, others don't.

Remember to budget for sound deadening the front doors at least. Good speakers deserve good installation, they will give their best then. Made a very noticable difference to the mid bass from my focals. Well worth the time and money.

Have fun, cheers.

This is a really big discussion on the subject, http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=50295

Check out the technical article at the top of the first thread.

Another set of splits that have a good rep at the moment are digital designs (DD) can't remember the number, $329 rrp from memory. Said to be very good for the money. Haven't heard them yet myself. Won some contest in a mag recently against splits worth twice as much. If you can believe everything you read, they should be stunning value.
