vs ss commodore ran out of fuel, refilled tank but whilst the engine cranks it will not fire, i can't hear the fuel pump when the ignition is turned on, i wouldn't expect the pump to die due to running out of fuel, so anyone have any ideas ?
vsssdave, I had the exact same problem on Thursday night...and sure as hell, it was the fuel pump. I couldn't believe it either but I would really suggest changing it if you never have. They are a pain to change if your car is lowered...or so I found out with mine, but as soon as I did, she fired straight up. Now seeing you have a full tank of fuel, you will need to drain the tank as much as possible. I was lucky enough to have a 20 litre jerry can on hand. I popped 2 bolts from the bottom of the pump plate and had 2 rotating 4 litre ice cream containers and a filter to stop dirt getting into the fuel. It was a slow process, but I managed to drain 20 litres of fuel (lost approx 2 litres) and it was enough drained that when the car was tilted back the fuel was away from the pump hole. Have fun Dale
The fuel return line cools and lubricates the fuel pump so when you run out of fuel the pump runs without and lubrication or cooling ....and usually fails unfortunately. There is a good "How to" in the help section.
