Intermittently, the trans will enter 3rd gear "limp-home" mode, and on one occasion it would not shift out of 1st.

I have researched that the 3rd gear fault may be speed sensor related.

For the 1st gear fault, it was suggested that the 1st gear fault may be due to adjustment of micro-switches in the T-bar shifter centre console. Any previous history of these sympotons and what was the cure?

Am I better off to read the fault codes with a scanner, before I chase these ghosts?

if the electronics are malfunctioning it may affect the shift strategy as you've described.

but the shift solenoids are just bolted onto the end of the hydraulic valvegear. if the hydraulics are playing up then they will be the cause of the problems, rather than the electronics.

i don't know which of those two explanations is the reason in your case.
