Morning fellors,

Here's some video example of my coil pack terminal spark test.
Let me know what you see wrong,

Cheers
Pete

Let me know what you see wrong,
The coil lead is not attached ?

I have always checked for spark using a lead and a sparkplug. Doing it the way in your videos will not give a consistent test and could possibly cause tracking problems?

Hey fellors,

I thought my spark test would of been good. No the lead is off, as i thought this would be ok.
What is the procedure I should use?
Have the spark plug out touching the earthing point, while turning over the engine.

Cheers
Pete

Just about to investigate this myself, what did you find out? Back in the days of a single coil and carbies if it broke down under load it was usually a coil. You could sit it in neutral and get full revs, you could sometimes drive the car half throttle up to high revs, but under full throttle accelerating it would break down. The test you did looks like some of your coils are sparking better than others. You can test with a spark plug and earth it on the engine, but that wont tell you if the coil is faulty under load. Could be injectors... local fella here charges $110 for a dyno tune, that might tell you.

A note from the Holden VS Workshop (Factory) Manual:

NOTE: Use an ST 125 spark checker or equivalent. An ST 125 requires about 25,000 volts (25 kilovolts, or 25 kV) to "spark". Do not use a spark plug in the open air earthed to the engine as an indication of sufficient "spark". Only a few kilovolts are required to jump the gap of a spark plug outside of the engine, and that would be an inadequate test of the ignition coil output ability.

Evening fellors,

I finally got a spark tester today, probably not the one recommended - update I googled the ST 125 after I posted this earlier..
But it's still measures the spark distance I think.
In the process of testing right now.

So if I set this tester to 25 it should jump that far? And I'm wondering what volts the sparks should be

Will post video's shortly

cheers
Pete

Terminal 5 seems weak? Missed one or two times also.
