I have a VS V6 auto wagon which made an odd noise this morning like a belt slipping. It did this three times for a couple of seconds. The car then drove a short distance home with no further trouble but the auto trans was not locked up. When I got home there is no reverse. Fluid is okay and fault code is 12(no fault) The trans is 285,000km but has had regular service.

I live a fair way out bush and getting it to the nearest auto trans place will be quite some job. Is it possible to get 4L60E from a wreckers and fit it at home. I have had the donk out and also done quite a few clutches etc on other vehicles. I have a service manual. or

Would it be a better bet all round to spend a coupla hundred getting it trucked to town and an auto trans specialist to look at it. There is a holden dealers considerably closer, are they worth a look.

    Any ideas gratefully considered

    regards
    deano

That sounds exactly the same as when my auto failed - a click, no lockup and no reverse.
There's a sun gear or something that goes in these autos and I was quoted $850 to replace that part but advised to go for the full reco at $1850.
You will need another auto - consider a changeover auto and fit it yourself - these come sealed and all you have to do is instal and fill with oil. I think they range from $1100 up and best bet would be to do a Google search. An auto from a wreck can be OK or buggered as well....it all depends on how long you intend to keep the car and how much $$$$ you want to spend. Good Luck.

Thanks for that, I googled the bit about sun gears and the descriptions certainly seem to describe exactly what my car is doing. No 2nd, no 4th and no reverse. I would like to keep the car as it has a new donk, brakes, shocks and gets a lot of miles(and has factory LPG). Did the $1850 include labour?? My problem is if I strike problems doing it at home then it's a long way to town. The only place in town is a GM dealer and they will have to send the auto off for repair. Is there a reputable mob who do exchanges and can freight?? That was how I got the donk done, delivered to the dealers and in in half a day.

This mob in Melbourne seem OK - they've been around for a few years:
    Wholesale Automatic Transmissions
I Googled "reconditioned 4l60e" to get the above site....there are more.
The $1850 included labour but others pay from $1400 to $2000 and was done at Southport on the Gold Coast. Not sure that I got the best deal but they could do it on the spot.

Thankyou for that, I'll be making a few calls in the morning, I broke the news to my wife that I expected about two grand.
