I'm probably going to sound like a complete moron here, but I was doing an oil change on my VS today, first time doing it, with the help of a mate who does his own servicing on his vs, both v6 ecos, and I think that I might have overfilled it, now it's a 3.8L engine right? I was advised to put the full 5L in, that doesn't seem right? Is it?

4.3l in the manual. Did you use 20W50 mineral oil?
I put 4l in mine because you don`t get all the oil out when you change it.
I tested mine at a few oil changes do oil change drive around check for leaks.
Drive to work in the morning park on level ground check dip stick in the afternoon spot on full every time.

Always put a new washer on the sump plug they are cheap.

Ecotecs take about 4.5L I reckon. Check the manual if you got one. If you overfilled it then dump some out. Use a clean container so if you let too much out you can just pour it back in.

That's not his problem.... he is asking why is it called a 3.8L motor but He can put it 5L into it..... he doesn't understand about the 'Engine Displacement'

Here's a link to help you with how they determine it all....
Engine displacement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Has nothing to do with the oil capacity of your car. It is more the "combustion" capacity

I'd just do small amounts at a time. Just keep checking the dip stick until it's on the full line or a couple mm over.

Lol thats the size of the engine not the oil sump capacity.

As others have said I reckon its between 4-4.5L from memory so just drain a little at a time until you get it right on the dipstick.
