If it was an old flathead V8 I'd say it was low oil pressure causing the conrod bearings to rattle - how many Ks on the motor?

And does it use oil or coolant or overheat? Has this problem happened suddenly or after doing something 'different'. Dont like the sound of the black stuff spitting out the exhaust as that could mean a head gasket or worse but that shouldn't cause a rattle. You could try a heavier grade of oil - maybe the stuff designed for older cars which most of our cars are.

Unfortunately it sounds like you may soon be spending some $$$ on an overhaul or a 2nd hand motor. Probably also a new radiator etc also. These things mount up and always cost more than you initially bargain for.
Bottom line is that it is probably cheaper and easier to buy another car....but, in the meantime go for the heavier oil for old cars as that may give you a bit more time. Good Luck.

197,000k's and causing all this, my friends ex-taxi @ 625,000k's started tapping and black smoke, just got another ecotech engine from the wreakers, only done 30,000k's and put it on, all sweet.
