vs v8 dosent start sometimes

Hooked up computer today came up with fault #46 - no reference while cranking

I had the same error code last year. Turned out to be the Hall Effect Sensor in the dizzy. New dizzy = all fixed.

But my problem was different to yours in that one day out of the blue it would turnover but not fire at all.

No ref, will be the hall sensor in the dizzy. New sensor or just do the whole dizzy. Just check all the usual stuff first to make sure its not a bodgy connection or melted wire somwhere causing the issue though before you rip in.
