hi everyone my son has a 96 vs series 2 sedan i drove it today for the first time in ages it sounded like the drivers front wheel was going to come off looks like the bearing can we fix this at home or is it best left for the mechanic un sure if this model has abs any help would be welcome
These front wheel bearings cant be serviced, they are a sealed hub unit and you have to replace the whole hub. When I did mine,I got quoted prices ranging from $190 each side from a holden dealer ,to $500 each side from ripco.I ended up going with the $190 ones from the local holden dealer, its also a bonus that they are genuine holden parts. There was reports that there were some dodgey chinese made hubs doing the rounds, these are advertised heaps cheaper than the proper ones and they are apparently dangerous,so if they are around $80 to $100 each, they might be these dodgey ones,be careful. There are also different hubs for cars with/without ABS,so carefully check which ones you buy.The ABS hubs are made specifically for left or right, whereas the non ABS hubs will fit either side. The prices Ive mentioned here were for non ABS hubs.
I bought ABS hubs from Holdens for $350 ea 3 years ago but there are cheaper ones on Ebay now or get one from wrecker for $50. Make sure you get the correct one as they are different left and right and also if you have IRS or a solid rear end. They are held on with 3 torq screws that are undone with a allen key after removing brake caliper etc....quite easy really. I'd jack that wheel up to doublecheck before buying another hub because if it's as bad as you say, the ABS electrics inside the hub would be sending warning signal out......may just be a badly worn tierod end, brake pads worn to metal or similar. Good Luck.
Save yourself some grief and buy a 10mm allen key socket to loosen the three bolts connecting the hub to the steering nuckle. You may also need a long extension bar or piece of pipe to assist in loosening the bolts. Make sure you spray the bolts with RP7/WD40 or equivalent a couple of times before you try and loosen them.
thanks again for the info the new hub went in without fuss and now runs like a bought one this is my first time on just commodores and find the information extremely valuable i have two commodores at home the vs and a new sv6 sport wagon so im sure i can call on you again to help if need be many thanks
Had some thump thump noises on my VS developing and sounded like it might be a wheel bearing given 250k + but it was not a consistent noise which you would expect. Before replacing them I jacked up the fronts and gave them a spin....smooth as but lining up across the tread I could see the wheels were lumpy/out of round by about 4-5 mils while spinning. Some new tyres and the first wheel alignment in a few years and it now rides like a limo. Lesson learned:Tyre noises can sound like a bearing so check before spending your hard earned on the wrong thing. And get decent tyres from a good tyre place. These tyres were fitted with 40 PSI in them so they rode like Fred Flintstone's chariot till I checked them and let them down to a better pressure. Second strike to Beaurepaires.... not going to be a third!
Question begs....Did you get a cheapish brand? And tyre profile can determine the starting pressure of a tyre....Tyre pressure is also driver and style dependant to get right.... So yes, you may bag Beaurepaires, but you haven't specified a few things...Like profile and what you wanted from a tyre...
Just a bog standard VS with 205/65 as my work car. 32psi would be what I expected. I had previously had a great run out of the same tyres ( Good budget tyres I thought looked similar to Bob Jane All Rounders) Blue Streak GT 665+ which gripped and lasted better than the previous Dunlops @32 psi. Like I said 40 PSI is on the hard side. 36 tops if you are towing etc. As to strike 1, my missus took our Carnival in to another store where they snapped off a few studs because I believe the fitter tried to undo left hand threads with a rattle gun and then tried to talk her into paying for it. I had to pull up out the front in my truck and see what was a going on and then it all changed but the smell of bullshit was high about only setting a low torque setting on the rattle gun even though my missus said it sounded loud as hell ( Her father owned a wreckers so she does know what a rattle gun should sound like). I expect the "experts" to know about left and right hand threads and not just keep rattling till something snaps. You have to try pretty hard to snap even one stud let alone 3 or 4 without a bit of analysis. Getting her to pay for their mistake was insulting.
Little insite....Blue Streaks are the cheaper line made by Dunlop.....And it doesn't surprise me they had some up and down movement.... As for snapping studs....Little rough them not picking it...Then trying to charge for their mistake.... The pressure....I can understand why you were annoyed.....They must have had a brain fade...
