I'm pretty sure the alternator in my statesman is on it's way out. to confirm this my brother has suggested putting the alternator from his commodore into my car to see if the dreaded battery light goes away, thus confirming is disproving my theory.

his commodore is a supercharged VT Calais and I'm aware it's got a different engine. it's a long shot but will the alternator fit the 3800?

No way, completely different. Doesn't even bolt up the same.

Check the charge wire behind the alternator first, the first few inches might be fired and need replacement.

When this is left too long in service the alternator will also need replacement as iut cooks the screw post terminal.

Also clean your battery terminals.

FYI search how to for the level 3 dash and you can bring up the volt meter to double check the charging system.

You probably need to replace the voltage regulator as the brushes in the regulator wear out over time. This causes the battery light to flicker for a time and then come fully on as the brushes wear more. Relatively cheap to buy and easy to replace.

I second the notion of dead regulator. The alternator themselves rarely "die" it's usually the little black box on the back lol. Screw off and screw the new one back on. Btw disconnect the battery when you do... Otherwise if the charge wire from the alternator brushes against the motor you will be left with a not so spectacular light show

I've already checked the battery terminals, they are clean and tight. The wires from the back of the alternator are all fine, none are melted or crunchy and brittle.

How does one bring up the voltage read out on the level 3 cluster? I've got a VR statesman.

Hold down all 4 buttons on the trip computer, start the engine, let all the buttons go, press mode to go through all the different readings.

Did you keep them all held down until you started the engine? Then let go? It worked on my VS and my dads VR Statesman.
