this is my first post so hi! anyway as the title says my 99 berlina needs a new engine. we were quoted $2785 for new engine, water pump, oil filter, starter motor ect. Just wondering if anyone had to get a new engine in their car and if this quote is reasonable? Me being novice at everything to do with cars i thought that when you bought a new motor the water pump and oil filters ect were already on it so please tell me your expierences with your new motors cheers elly.
is that price just for the engine and other parts, or does it include the labour to remove the old engine, and install the new one ? be careful: for instance, what is a "new" engine - new from the factory, never been in a car (unlikely); a second-hand engine, if so, had it done 50,000 km, or 250,000 km, or 500,000 KM ? or a reconditioned engine: second-hand, but has had major internal parts inspected, and replaced if necessary ? Whichever is the case, what is the warranty ? and when you've spent $2785, you still have a 1999 Berlina. I had a look at the RedBook, which only give values back to 2000. A 2000 Berlina is quoted in the range of - Private Price Guide $4,200 - $5,800 Trade In Price Guide $2,100 - $3,700 So, it might be time to put your money into something newer ...
I'd be looking at 2nd hand engines from a good wrecker that gives a 30 day warranty or something incase its a dud. As you say, any engine you buy will have all that stuff (even though oil and filter should be changed which would cost $50 or so plus labour) and you could use parts like stater motor, alternator etc from your old engine if you needed because I'm guessing all that stuff is fine. Whats wrong with your old engine? Getting that one fixed is also an option depending on whats wrong with it
he wouldnt tell me how many KM's it had done but apparently he had just turned down another engine with 211 000km's on it because he said it was too much. apparently it includes all the labor and it is a reconditioned motor but yea like you said i dont think it is worth it for a car that isnt worth all that much anymore, we are going to call around a few other mechanics and see if there is much price difference, and then i guess we will go from there. thanks for your reply
my old engine seized apparently. we thought it was just the timing chain because it was very noisy and then we heard something 'pop' or 'bang' and then the engine cut out, but the mechanic said the starter motor burnt out aswell so we cant use much from the old engine.
i just wrote a reply but now its not showing but anyway apparently it is reconditioned and the mechanic wouldnt tell me how many km's it had done but he also mentioned that he had turned down one because it had done 211000kms and he said it wasnt worth it because my car hadnt even done that many. like you said the car isnt worth all the much anymore especially not to spend that amount of money on it. we will call around and see if we can get some other quotes on it because i think he might be ripping me off because im female, if there isnt much price difference else where then i guess i will have to pay up lol.
2000 HOLDEN COMMODORE S VT II Private Cars For Sale in NSW - carsales.com.au Plenty of decent cars around, but like you say, if you think you will be taken advantage of take someone along with you. I usually take my missus along with me when having to bargain, being of Sicilian background she's got bigger "palle" than i do.
so called around.. $1500 for reconditioned engine, plus starter motor plus labor plus new battery and it includes $100 worth of towing the car from the other mechanic. think i was getting ripped off... he will be calling me back with how many km's the engine has done ect but it also comes with 3 months warranty on the engine and all of his work. screw that other jerk right off! saving nearly $1300!! thankyou to who has replied much appreciated.
