I have a VT Calais 50th Anniversary (series 1) V6 s/c with what i think is a Climate Control / aircon fault. Since i got the car in '06 the aircon plays up every now and then. One very cold winter morning (minus 1) i pressed the climate control "windscreen demist" button but the fan would not work (even 1 hour later when i was still driving the car in 60-80km zones). The climate control display was fine, everything seemed to work, no "X" in the display, etc. No blown fuses or fusible links. Later that day when i drove back home the fan worked fine on all settings including the windscreen demister (although of course it wasn't as freezing then as it was that morning). Didn't have this trouble again all winter. More recently the aircon stopped blowing cold air. I had the system checked including a high pressure nitrogen test & two leaks were found & fixed, then the system was regassed. It worked fine that day, but then the next day in 30 degree heat the fan speed seemed to stay slow/medium, even though the car was boiling from sitting in the hot sun. It should have selected the highest fan setting until the car cooled down but it refuses to do this even after half an hour. BUT if i put the climate control into manual mode (by manually selecting a higher fan setting) the fan worked fine on all manual fan speeds including the "high" setting. I have had this problem more than once including before the regassing, although it's an intermittent fault and never does it at the garage (always on its best behaviour there! :bang. Now everything is working again normally including the fan automatically selecting the highest setting until the car cools down. Therefore i reckon i might have a fan problem. I don't think it's the resistor pack or fan motor, as i can select all fan speeds manually in manual mode. It's unlikely to be something wrong with the refrigerant (gas) charge. I never hear any "hissing" noises and yes i checked for snakes (just joking ). All i can think of is the main (body) wiring harness may be shorting somewhere (this might explain the "intermittent" nature of the fault). Or maybe either the sun sensor (at the top of the dashboard) and/or the internal temp sensor (under the dash cluster) are faulty, or even the climate control switch/LCD assembly itself, i don't know. Has anyone had this exact problem? Or can anyone suggest how / where / what i do to test my climate control system? Would Tech-2 at Holden be likely to find anything or should i just take the car to an auto sparky? Thanks
i've just got replacement light/sun & internal temp sensors so i'm replacing them both to see if that fixes it. If not i am stuck.
