Ive just been offered one, seems in pretty good condition BUT it has the issue of having done 300,000kms.

Is it worth buying and replacing the engine? How much longer will the engine run properly after having done that many kms? How hard would it be to replace the engine in it (its got a 3.8 litre) and costs of getting said engine?

In the end would it be worth the time and effort?

How much are they asking for it?

Depending on how its been treated, it should still last you a fair while, there are a couple of VT's and Statos going around with 500,000k's +, as well as older cars (my old mans VB SL/E had around 420,000 when the odo stopped working :p)

Really depends on how much theyre asking. Take it for a test drive if possible, see how it responds and stuff.

VT Calais are a beautiful car :D ( I may be a little biased :p)

personally, for that price... I'd say buy.

If worst comes to worst and you need a new engine, maybe at the very highest about 3,000 (I seen people talkin about gettin engines for half that price though) - I wouldnt know, havent had to shop around for a new engine... yet!

If you can get it for around the 2grand mark... I'd definatly buy up!

There was a car yard when I was looking that had a 98 calais with 230,000kms on it, and he wanted about 10grand (about a year and a half ago)

What about the other components of the car? What sort of condition would then be in after 300,000kms? Alot of things would need replacing wouldnt they?

You'd be finding other things wrong fairly frequently.

But the driveline is where the money is at.

As has been said, you can get a motor or box cheap if you need to, i'd also say buy for 2000 or less

just keep some extra money around for stuff, as its a matter of 'when', not 'if'.

Should i be right in assuming its a white Ex Taxi?

thats some serious K's for a company car, unless it was used for driving interstate.

Its double the Average K's for a car that year (15,000 being what is rated as average K's for a car used for Daily driving)

But yeah, still doesn't mean tunless you buy my Old works Van, don't go there!
