original vs-vt alternators shite themselves for no reason . almost all aftermarket are cheap chinese imports. i have seen the regulators literally fall apart within 3 days.
this was more than likely your problem that cooked your battery. your alt has a 3phase ac winding the regulators job is to turn that into 12vdc. not uncommon for a 12v alt with buggered reg to put out 80 odd volts into 12v system . not good

Err - 80 volts? Terrific! Nothing like overkill!!
Now the regulator contains the brushes right?
Ive replaced that part, but it's second hand so should I be wary now? Anything to look out for?

Poor connections

Working then at dealerships i found a few a vs-vt with burnt wiring actually some engine bays caught fire..Problem was a poor connection at the alternator (high resistance) which would cause the wiring to heat up till till it burnt/caught fire... Check your alternator connections, its easy to replace the reg/brushes in the alternator as it comes in one unit..:wax:
