I have done this to at least 4 cars before never had a problem till now,i dropped the gear box to put in new filter and gasket,i cleaned off all the old gasket from car and pan,put in new filter, then i used gasket sealant on pan then put on gasket then gasket selant ontop, lined it all up put screws in and tighten to the propper order and talk, waited a full day and night then put in trans fuild.no leak all good, about a week after the job someone else came along decided the screws where too loose and retighten them all,now i have a huge leak like 2 liters the gasket is hanging to the rear and the front looks ripped,i believe that by retightening it with the gasket sealant on it has broken the gasket.people are telling me i did the job wrong in the first place you dont put gasket sealant on,and the person that re tighten it is blameing it on a bad gasket.i'm not blaming anyone just want to do it right so came on to ask peoples opion on here.
There's no need for gasket goo with a standard calk gasket. The torque specs are in my how-to on this subject. The over tightening will have squashed the gasket out, the torque specs are very low for pan bolts. Did you say yuou dropped the whole box out to do the service????
thanks for that no i didn't drop the box to do the job i just raised the front so i could get under the car. just took off the gear box oil pan.
why would someone else retighten bolts on a job you did? they shouldn't mess with it. Totally their fault.
I always use Hylomar gasket spray on cork gaskets. Ease of installation and correct sealing method. Every bolt or nut has a torque setting. If not stated by the manufacturer in the assembly/reassembly section, use a torque chart instead for the correct size thread.
thanks heaps for all the help and advice ,never heard of hylomar spray before does it cost alot?sounds great from google comments if it's good as a head sealant wished i had used it,any ways Have re done the job and noticed that the first gasket was very thin and rubber and the new gasket was thicker and made of cork.so waiting for it to set says 24hrs on the gasket sealant.did the job all by me self will put fulid in when time is up,then from memory you start the car and then go through p,d,r,1,2,3, and then back again to p to get the fuild up propperly then check the level.then will go for a drive and should be all good.
Hylomar isn't expensive at all. About $10 for a 500mL can and about the same for the paste bottle. Should be found at the usual automotive outlets. I only use the spray. God's gift for spray sealant. Great as a head sealant. I've used it on every head gasket change I've done since finding it 5 years ago. Rubber gaskets I use vaseline, 10W engine oil or a light smear of high temperature grease. Cork, hylomar spray. Bolts and threads, depends on application but always either antiseize, a loctite compound, engine oil or grease. Working in the earthmoving/mining industry the simple automotive tricks don't suffice. I always like to think for the next bloke or if I were to complete the task again. Transmission level check as per manufacturer's service manual. Or. Engine at operating temperature. Transmission in park. Engine idling. Transmission oil level should be seen in the HOT mark, if not, fill until correct level is reached. No two ways about it, it's either full or not.
cool thanks for that i used a bit of thread lock after cleaning the bolts will buy some of that hylomar and put it away for the next job to try it out, sounds like a good spray glue
