Check at the base of the handbrake that the switch that is pushed down (and thus turns the light off) is being hit by the handbrake lever.

May just require the handbrake to be tweaked in the direction of the switch to ensure it touches it.

Too many to list......
That light is not just for the handbrake. Check your brake fluid level. This same issue had me stumped for ages lol

Possibly something like a coin is stuck between the switch and handbrake.

check your brake fluid... could be either too low or you could have air in the cylinder.. does your brake pedal feel soft at all?

My hand brake is doing the same thing. It seems quite loose and if I knock it the dash light comes on with the alarm and its driving me nuts. Only just had it adjusted yesterday but light still coming on. Any ideas how to fix this without having to embarrass myself and go back to the mechanic?

If you just had it adjusted, I'd say the switch is buggered.

Possibly something like a coin is stuck between the switch and handbrake.

Genius! There was a $2 coin and 2 parking tickets wedged next to the sensor. Removed and all is working fine again! Thank you :)
