Ok guys so ill start off by saying im a very stupid man after what has caused this problem.

I jacked the front of the car from the oil sump and cracked it. So my question is, what material is an LS1 sump... the crack is about 3 inches long and am not sure if welding is a good idea... though if it is cast iron then welding would be alot cheaper.

It's aluminium. Next time a block of wood to protect the sump if you must jack it up from the sump, it's a better idea to use the K frame.

Damn that sucks. I'd replace the sump but that is an engine out job generally.

Just put a HSV sticker over it, better than new...

Lots of work to replace unfortunately, either engine out or k-frame out. If it could be welded in-situ I'd be tempted to go down that path.

The VT to VZ V6/V8 workshop manuals all warn against jacking or otherwise supporting the engine from the sump, as the clearance between the oil pump pickup and sump bottom is only very small, so if the sump bottom has been pushed up slightly as well as being cracked, it may cause the engine to be starved of oil, and we all know what that means. Id just replace it, dont get it welded.

Try calling someone that can weld alloy and see if they can weld it from the outside, chances are that it may not be able to but it's worth a shot.

Welding the sump whilst it is still on the car will introduce contaminants into the inside of the engine. You could end up with more problems than just a cracked sump.
