I purchased a memcal from blackstar for my vt v6. Made no difference to the performance. I dont have hard evidence as i never had the car dynoed but definately no better under foot. Im in the process of purchasing a memcal from doc bob as his reputation on this site is outstanding.

Dr Bob is very sensible :), I'll tell you guys an honest story.

As you all know I'm into my home made tuning. Someone that had a Dr Bob chip told me it didn't feel like it made hardly anymore power in his car and wanted to see if I could make something faster just for a challenge, no money involved, I took the challenge :).

This was before I had a V8 and couldn't test this chip I was making so I just made it using sensible logic, bit of cutting and pasting from all the best factory stuff, bit of engine simulation software and a bit of imagination and voila! it was ready. The old chip arrived and it's a Dr Bob special, so I removed the eprom and stuck my new one in there, of course I had to have an investigation at Bobs chip to see what hes made of :D and what do I see?! it's like within one spark degree everywhere... of the one I just made, fuel map was a little different... but still hardly worth swapping them over. Anyway I say to this dude are you SUUUUUUUUUURE this Dr Bob chip doesn't make you car go faster? because I spent ages making my version of a V8 chip and I know it was going to be good, and here I am looking at Bobs, it's allmost indentical.

Anyway so this forced me to make a more radical tune than I was going to, to be sure it was going to make more power than Bob's :). So that's what I did and the guy reckons it was the stuff :driving: , ok but it was getting close to the ragged edge :).

I did test the Bob special in my V8 once I got it and it does go fairly hard indeed, much better than stock, yes sure enough I can make a faster one for my own car, with my own car here going up and down the road all day trying different things.

But if I had to make a chip that I knew would make more power on 100 different cars and take into account a few breathing mods on some cars and not on others, then I would have to say something like Bob makes is spot on and smart, it's not overly radical but it's going to make lots more power than stock (even if some people don't notice, it will be there) and it's not going to hurt your car. Ok so fair enough I haven't been into this hobby as long as Bob or a few other people that kick around here, but I do know alot about it now and I can see that Bob is going to do the best job you can do for what he does.

I don't think you could get much more out of a mail order tune that's going to work on all cars so you can trust him, I've also seen powerchip, fueltronics and quite a few race car tunes. The typical commerical tunes? they are just copies of HSV's spark and fuel maps, nothing special, if I don't know what I'm doing then those guys REALLY have no idea :p most of the HSV tunes are pretty mild and a bit lame anyway it's still factory after all. Bobs are quite a bit better and more sporty than that

That was a pretty big story for the middle of the night, but it might shed some light on this whole memcal deal and you know Dr Bob might look like a shifty Chopper Reid clone :p but really he knows his stuff

Just thought I would post some feedback in regards to these memcals. As posted above I had purchased a memcal from blackstar on ebay and experienced no performance upgrade. Reading about doctor bobs product and reputation I decided to give him a go. I recieved bob's memcal two days ago and immediately noticed the difference. If you were concidering getting a "performance" memcal I would definately be speaking to doctor bob. You are garunteed to recieve a top product backed up by a world of experience! Thanks bob

  5. Thanks for the heads up on this blackstar guy, I was just about to buy a chip off him after he sent me an email saying the differences in engines were so minimal that as long as I fit a free flowing exhaust I will experience the full benefit of the chip! Surely headers and a full twin system are going to increase the power regardless of chip???? Will contact Doctor Bob now.

I would go with Dr Bob too. He has taken the time to reply to all my PM's about a PCM issue I have and then we have just started talking about Memcal work. He has proven his work with many members on this forum which is testiment to his quality of work.

Great thread as I was considering buying one of these chips for my 5.0L even though a mate of mine had probs with his black star chip 18mths ago! Thought that must have been a one off case as blackstar's ebay feedback is 100% positive. He sent out the wrong chip and then a dodgy knock sensor etc etc..lot of f#*king around for my mate who finally had to book it in with Holden to find out that his engine light was staying on cos the knock sensor was stuffed! Still I thght he'd just been unlucky...i wouldn't touch blackstar with a bargepole now..cheers all I will quizz Dr Bob re a memcal!

Never purchased from blackstar myself but i was talking with a guy that had a vs ss and he purchased a chip and knock sensor package deal and had nothing but trouble. after sending 3 chips back and forward with problems like not running at all or engine check light staying on he ended up getting a refund.

I have been trying to work out the in's and outs of VT 6 chips. for those who don't know, it boils down to this.

On a stock engine - The factory chip is very close to as good as your going to get. It 'learns' over time and changes it's tune slightly (within set parameters) to give you good results.

I'm not saying that there is nothing you can do, but it probably would not be worth looking at a tune until you have made significant mods to the engine.

I'm just paraphrasing foamy here, it's (more or less) what he advised me.

    Cheers
