Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for minute to disable the air bag. Undo the 4 torx screws on the back of the steering wheel, manoeuvre the airbag assembley away from the steering wheel and undo the connectors. Carry the airbag with the hornpad facing away from you and store it with the horn pad facing up. Undo the steering wheel retaining nut and undo it nearly all the way off. Then pull the steering wheel towards you while rocking it and it should come off. If it doesn't come off you might need a puller. Don't hit the shaft with a hammer as you may damage it. Mark the installed position of the steering wheel before you remove it so you can put it back on in the same position. Be careful of the clock spring, don't turn it ,leave it the way it was when you removed the steering wheel.

You don't have to be so cautious with the airbag module. It's not a bomb. The only way it can go off is by getting the correct series of signals from the ECU, impact sensors and the ELR seatbelts. Once you have unplugged it there is no way it can go off.

I was quoting from the Gregorys manual and my Holden service CD, they both say the same thing. If there was absolutely no chance of the airbag deploying they wouldn't mention it. Better to be safe than sorry.

lol, we used to handle claymores with less care then what an airbag should be. As for airbags going off with static, i doubt that is possible.

From what I learned when doing wheel alignments, air bags are one of the safest devices in the car. The US had issues because of the lack of technology when they implemented them back in the 80's. There are numerous simultaneous triggers that set off an airbag, unless all these are triggered it can't deploy. There are a few articles explaining the ways an airbag is triggered, it actually makes interesting reading. Gregories is a good guide to mechanical repairs but there are a lot of unnecessary precautions in there. I suppose they just want to eliminate all possible accountability in case something goes wrong.
