GDAY ALL!! I just had the steering rack boots changed on my VT and the wheel alignment apparently done. My drama is that now the steering wheel sits tilted slighlty to the right for the car to go straight!!!!! and the mechanic said its my tyres that are at 70% tread (bf goodrich sport t/a) are worn slightly around the edges that is causing this, but it never did that before i changed the steering rack boots? Can someone please tell me how i can get the steering wheel sitting dead straight again as driving down the highway at 110kph is annoying with the wheel sideways??
they just havent aligned the wheel with the rack. take wheel off and straighten it then fit it back on
Thanks Dave for the quick reply, could you tell me should I take it back to them as they are just a tyre fitting place or take it to a mechanic?
take it back to them or go elsewhere if you dont think they know what they are talking about. if a proper wheel alignment was done, the steering wheel would sit straight. something is out of whack. it could very well be the tyres like they have said, i have had similar issues on other cars, but like you said, it would have done it before the boot was replaced. if in doubt, put your rear tyres on the front and get them to do another wheel alignment. if it still comes up the same, the tyres arent the issue. if they still try and tell you it is the issue, go somewhere else.
they would of adjusted the toe out in turns and they obviously havnt re-centred the steering wheel afterwards it just needs taken of and refitted straight.they should of done it .
you should not need to remove the steering wheel and recentre it at all. if you need to do this, the job hasnt been done properly.
^^^^^^ Correct the job has not been done properly, I would be taking it back to the place and say fix it if they keep telling you its your tyres they are full of crap. Worn tyres wont effect your steering wheel alignment... No matter how bad your tyres are the steering wheel should always point straight if the steering rods/tie rod ends and been wound in and out evenly with the steering wheel kept in the striaght ahead position
it depends on wether it was getting the correct lock left and right if they have had to adjust the tierod ends to centre the rack to get the same amount of turns left and right the wheel has to come off to re-centre the wheel to suit

Incorrect. If the tyres are worn enough to make the car pull to one side, the steering wheel will be crooked as you have to hold it down on one side to compensate for the pulling. What does the car do when you let go of the steering wheel? Does it pull to the left? If it still goes straight then the rack isn't centred properly, if it does pull left it could be tyres or it could be incorrect alignment. Swap the tyres on the front left to right and see what happens.
