Hey guys this is my first post on the forum, Ive recently had a problem with my transmission and when i go up hills or any sort of heavy acceleration it feels like the transmission clunks and slips in and out at times, its hard to explain but its noticeable, before this happen though i simply had the transmission clunk which i thought may have been transmission fluid...but then this new thing happen overnight pretty much and it feels like its slipping or going into gear then back out..hard to explain so thats what has lead me to this site, i was using the search as much as i could to try and diagnose what it could be (leads and plugs..coils...fluid...solanoids...forgetting some but anyways..) and with all that i ended up just taking it to a transmission specialist today who took it for a drive for me and had a little look, he's saying that it could be my leads and plugs and that its not a major transmission problem that he can tell but it might be more a motor problem which will be a process of elimination...and that it could also be a ignition module aswell? can a crack in your top radiator hose cause this problem? i went and bought one anyway to just replace myself and i was just wondering if theres any tricks to replacing just the top hose? my car is VERY low on coolant/water (meaning theres NO coolant in the coolant chamber and not a whole lot of water in the radiator, also is muddy too), so i dont know if that will affect the way i change the hose? and is it okay to just fill my radiator up with demineralized water/normal water until i take it to the radiator mechanic and get the system flushed/pressure tested fully? anyways, he was prepared to charge me 120$ for leads and god knows how much for plugs and labour so i decided i would just go and buy my own and try and replace them myself because judging from what i've read here its meant to be a easy undertaking (no doubt hard for someone like me whos new to them lol) does this sound like it could be the problem and is it worth me buying some leads and spark plugs for 99$? also can anybody please try and explain how to do this? the guy from repco said that if i gave him a call tomorrow he would come over after work and give me a hand so i do have that advantage from buying them from repco rather than paying a transmission shop $120+ to do the same thing... sorry for the long noob post and i realise its most of these problems have been answered on the forum 100's of times (dont worry i read them..) i just wanted to see what you guys think after i went and seen a mechanic and have his opinion...thanks..
soo update even though no replys , i replaced my leads and plugs and fixed the problem must have been mis firing the spark plugs were worn out to buggery, now my cars overheating due to a crack in top radiator hose, does a VT 99 model have a drain plug or do i need to take the bottom radiator hose off? im worried about taking it off because will it be a pain to get back on the old clips if i dont break them trying to get them off...
After reading the first paragraph of your first post I immediately thought, stuffed lead. Pity I didn't see it when you first posted. There is no drain plug, remove bottom radiator hose.
haha yeah figured after searching around the site id try my leads first and turned out it was..thanks tho! if i remove the bottom hose im going to need to buy a new set of clamps wont i? i just read a method where u undo the top radiator hose, put a garden hose in the radiator end and run it so the water runs out the top hose until its clear? then wait 20secs or so once u stop the hose to let the remaining coolant/water out then reattach hose fill up with coolant....the only problem i see with doing it this way is i wont be able to get any demineralized water in will i?
If you do it that way you won't get any coolant in because the engine and radiator will be full of water. You shouldn't need to get a new clamp if you remove the bottom hose. I also like to undo a few of the thinner hoses as well and stick the hose up them, and don't forget to set the heater to hot so the heater core gets flushes as well. When it's all flushes and reconnected put 6 litres of coolant concentrate in first and then top up with water. If you mix the coolant first you won't get the proper 50/50 ratio because there will still be some water in the block.
ahh thank you, ill try that tomorrow ill use some pliers to get the clamps off, once i flush it all out with a garden hose do i just clamp it all up, fill the radiator up with demineralized water, circulate that for 10mins or so then drain it so i can have mostly demineralized water left in my block? then just re attach the bottom hose again and add 6litres of coolant and 50/50 mix to the overflow bottle? sorry if the post is confusing its just stressing me out because i was ment to have it done by tomorrow so i can drive it to work without it boiling again and im overthinking it lol....
If the hoses and clamps are looking manky just replace them. Piece of mind and all that. Yes thats the correct way to flush the rad. To flush the block and heater make sure the heater dial is in the max position, remove the thermostat housing and thermostat (buy new thermostat, they cost jack ****). Run hose in the hole where the thermostat was until only clear water comes out the lower rad hose
ohh i really would rather not play around with the thermostat gotta walk before i can run lol im better of replacing the bottom hose at the same time aswell? i really hope i dont stuff it all up some how im guessing that aslong as i get 6 litres of coolant back in while draining the air i wont blow the car up ?
